Mark's Turf Tips

Penn Mulch Trio

Need better seeding results? Try PennMulch!

PennMulch is a recycled, compressed pellet paper product developed by PennState University.  It is applied after seeding, has fertilizer in it, along with a patented super absorbent polymer for moisture retention and is 100% weed seed free!  The recommended application rate is 75lbs/1000sq ft   or  666sqft/50 lb bag. This product is excellent for doing repairs to a lawn and especially after doing planting work in and around existing turf.

One of the best comments I have received on this product is "it provides a clean and finished look, for a completed job." Give it a try!

Do you think it's too late for fertilizer? Think again!

Studies show that turf keeps picking up fertilizer for a period of about 2 weeks after the top stops growing. Around here most guys say they make there last cut around Thanksgiving. This means turf grass is still picking up fertilizer into the second week of December, depending on weather.

If you want your customers lawn to be the first to be looking bright green in spring, pick up some 10-20-15 with iron and get it down NOW!

Spotlight On: Thuja plicata 'Virescens'
Thuja p. 'Virescens'
Thuja plicata 'Virenscens'

Need a quick growing evergreen for screening? Give Thuja p. 'Virescens' a try!

Western Red Cedar is a native of the Pacific Northwest, typically found in cool, moist areas. The species is a large tree reaching 100' + in its native habitat, but 'Virescens' will only get about 20-30' tall x 9-12' wide. It has a pyramidal habit, deep glossy green foliage which holds throughout the winter. A nice choice for hedges and screening.

Plant in full sun to part shade in moist soil. Many people find it to be deer resistant, comparable to 'Green Giant' Arborvitae.

Stop in soon and consider this the next time you need a versatile evergreen.

Perennial of the Week:  Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'
Festuca Elija Blue
Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'
common name
: Blue Fescue
size: 10-12"
interest: Thin, stiff, powdery blue foliage
culture: Full sun, well drained soil
time of year: Late spring, summer, fall, early winter
companion plants: Lambs Ear, Salvia, Cabbage & Kale, low-growing Juniper

Here's a small, clump forming grass with blue foliage that perks up almost any garden. Nice choice for front of the border, tucked in rock gardens, containers and commercial beds. Tolerant of drought, heat and hot sun.  Cut back foliage early spring and divide every few years to rejuvenate and help keep a neat appearance.
