Perennial of the Week:  Miscanthus sinensis 'Adagio'

Miscanthus sin. Adagiocommon name: Japanese Silver Grass
size: 3-5' tall x 3' wide
interest: Silvery plumes

culture:  Prefers moist soil and full sun
time of year: Late summer into fall
companion plants: Montauk Daisies, Sheffield Pink Chrysanthemums, Sedum 'Autumn Joy', Carpet Roses

'Adagio' is a compact selection of Maiden Grass introduced by Kurt Bluemel (one of the founding fathers of the Ornamental Grass Movement back in the '60s). It is similar to 'Yaku Jima' but with good separation of flowers and foliage making it really stand out. It has a fine texture and is more compact in size making it great for the smaller garden.

Plant in somewhat moist soil in a full sun location. Leave seed heads up through the winter - cutting them back once they begin to look tired, the latest being early spring.

Japanese Silver Grass is a native of low-land slopes and mountains of Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and China. Learn more about Miscanthus 'Adagio' here.
