Remembering September 11th, 2001

Sunday, September 11th marks the ten year anniversary of one of the darkest days in American History.

American Flag

I was working in the DC area at the time for a high end landscape firm, and couldn't get a call out to check in with some people very close to me in both New York and the Pentagon, and didn't find out until the next day that a couple of my friends' fathers were trapped in the Twin Towers when they collapsed. Those of you that know me are aware that I'm not often at a loss for words...but I don't know if there is much anyone can say from 300 miles away to someone grieving the loss of a loved one who died in a terrorist attack.

It took me almost 5 years to drive across the George Washington Bridge coming from the South, because for the 7 years I lived in DC and Maryland, the skyline of New York City told me I was almost home to Connecticut. That skyline, which of course included the Twin Towers, is still difficult to look at when driving that route ten years later.

But let's move past the sadness for a moment. The next day, I saw more American flags displayed than ever. Politicians set aside differences to help the country recover. We, as the American people, refused to let terrorism stop our way of life. Despite our many differences, there are many who can proclaim that they are proud to be Americans, so on behalf of the crew at Planters' Choice, I wish you a Happy Patriot Day!

And from Chuck:

I personally feel fortunate to be a nurseryman and tree grower. Over the past 10 years, we at Planters' Choice have been called repeatedly to donate trees for memorials to 9/11. Trees are the answer to give a lasting living memorial to the people who lost their lives on that aweful day. What is more beautiful than the "Glory of the Tree"?

The Connecticut Nursery and Landscape Association was called upon to get their member nurseries to donate the plantings for the memorial at Calf Pasture Beach in Westport. We are so proud to be part of that group.

God Bless America!

Proudly,

Chuck and Darryl Newman
