Irene...

Face of Irene

There are still many of you without power from Sunday's Hurricane, and still more dealing with its aftermath - debris, downed trees and damaged property.

We just want to wish you all the best in getting your power back on and in the cleanup.

Here is some information you may be handy.  State's Hurricane Information.

What's New in Our Industry

EAC closeupA Remarkable Solution to a Widespread Problem

Some cringe when they hear about Burning Bush, and some no longer use the plant because of its potentially invasive characteristic. There are few plants that can tolerate the abuse a Burning Bush can; that's why Dr. Li's research at UCONN is truly remarkable. By its very genetic makeup, it is impossible for the selection of Burning Bush he has created to produce viable seed. Put simply, his introduction can't be invasive. We hope to procure some to grow for you sometime in 2012 or 2013, and will certainly keep you in the loop as this remarkable plant becomes available! Take a look here!

Certifications and Licenses

There are many required licenses for work related to landscaping. A number of our customers have been recently reported and paid very steep fines. To install an irrigation system, work must be done under the supervision of a licensed plumber. To install landscape lighting, someone needs to be a licensed electrician. While there is a bit of gray area on this one, any tree over 15 feet tall needs to be trimmed by a licensed arborist. Possibly the most important license is the Commercial Supervisory License that is required to apply pesticides for hire. Not to mention that to do any sort of contracting work, including everything above, one needs a Home Improvement Contractor's License.

Perennial of the Week:  Anemone
Anemone 'Prince Henri'
Anemone x hybrida 'Whirlwind'

common name: Windflower
size: 24-36" (includes flower height)
interest: 2-4" single flowers with yellow centers- petals are white, pink or lilac & nice foliage
culture: Full sun to part shade in consistently moist, well-drained soil
time of year: Summer to fall
companion plants: Meadowsweet (Filipendula)Ferns, Hosta, Turtlehead (Chelone), Bugbane (Cimicifuga)

A long blooming graceful perennial that blooms at a time when others are starting to decline. The folilage forms a nice mound of trifoliate dark green leaves. As they bloom later in the season they make a great foil for hiding the dying foliage of spring flowering bulbs.  They like moist soil in sun/part shade, but do not like to have their root system sitting in wet soil. Plant them in an area where you'll allow them to spread because if they like the site they definitley will!

Check out our in-bud and soon-to-bloom 'Honorine Jobert' which is pure white, 'Prince Henri'-a semi-double rose-pink, 'Robustissima' - single pink and 'Whirlwind' which is double white.

Making Hoops

Making Hoops

As you can tell, we use a lot of 3/4" steel pipe for the hoop houses that protect our plants over the winter. They're used either for new houses or to repair any bent ones. Where do all those hoops come from? We make them - here's how:

They start off by placing the straight pipe on the custom-made jig, then walk it around until it meets the opposite side putting the initial bend in the pipe. Then they have to make the angled bend on both ends which fit into the short pipes along the house edges. The hoops have quite a bit of spring to them so installing them takes some finesse. Once in place they are held together by a long, notched ridge board. Voila!
