Darryl says Thumbs up for Littleleaf Linden!
Linden 3
Littleleaf Linden: Delicate leaf with developing flower buds, uniform branching
and a great shade tree!

In our eyes, a good shade or street tree needs to have several characteristics.  First, it must be disease and pest resistant as well as be able to tolerate difficult cultural conditions such as compacted soils, hot sun, salt and pollution.  Good branching and strong wood is critical so it can tolerate snow and ice load.  And it must cast shade and be aesthetically pleasing.  Linden is among the best for all these reasons.  Take a look at our 3.5-4" Little Leaf Linden planted this spring on Riverside Avenue in Westport!

Perennial of the Week: Gentiana dahurica 'Nikita'
Gentian dahurica
Gentiana dahurica 'Nikita'
common name
: Dahurian Gentian
size: 15-20" t  x 24"+ w
interest: Vivid blue flowers
culture: Full sun - part shade
time of year: June - July
companion plants: Purple Cone Flower, Giant Lambs Ear, False Sunflower, Daylilies, Hardy Carnation, Cranesbill, Ornamental Grasses

An interesting sprawling mound of thick sturdy stems that bear clusters of deep blue tubular flowers. Leaves are narrow and a very shiny green. Give it the room it wants for a more relaxed look or plant near sturdier neighbors to help support its flailing arms. Plant in full sun with well drained soil. It doesn't like it overly wet, or overly fertilized. A nice, long-lasting cut flower, too! A native of Asia.

One of Steve's favorites - give them a try in your next perennial garden.

Mark's 6 Tips for Avoiding the Dreaded  "3 H Syndrome"

Fertilizers 4
l-r. Eagle fungicide, 9-2-5 Organic base with 6% iron, 17-0-5 with Bifenthrin and 20-0-5 with Merit.
As we enter the hot summer months there are a number of things to keep in mind for maintaining turf looking good for as long as possible.

1. Apply preventative fungicides during periods of expected "high heat and humidity" - the dreaded "3 H Syndrome"!

2. Apply 9-2-5 Organic base with 6% Iron. The iron helps hold a good green color.

3. June & July are the optimum time for applying Merit or Merit with 20-0-5 to kill grubs that hatch from eggs this fall.

4.  17-0-5 with Bifenthrin can be used for a variety of devastating surface insects such as chinch bugs.

5. Prevent excess moisture loss by making sure mower blades are sharp and are rotating at the proper RPM.

6. Make sure irrigation systems are adjusted and functioning properly.
