The Definition of Fastigiate
Fastigiate Trees 8
l-r: Fastigiate Hornbeam, 'Dawyck Gold' European Beech, 'Fastigiate' Blue Atlas Cedar, 'Rosehill' English Oak, 'Dawyck Purple' European Beech, 'Slender Silhouette' Sweetgum, 'Degroot Spire' Arborvitae, Fastigiate Tuliptree 'Arnold'

Fastigiate  [fa stíjjee ət]: Having a narrow, upright habit with branches erect and close together.

Above are eight examples of trees with just such a habit - fastigiate. They're what you need for those tight spots that call for something narrow, or a site that needs a tall accent - almost like an exclamation point! Planted in straight rows they make excellent wind blocks and can have a formal look - very nice for dividing spaces or as a background to show off other gardens or focal points.  Here's the skinny on these fastigiate 8:

Carpinus betulifolia 'Fastigiata' (European Hornbeam) 30-40' t x 20-30' w. Narrow in youth, then becoming oval with age. It responds very well to pruning if used as a hedge. Dense upright branching makes a pretty winter scene and nice nesting opportunities for birds. Fall color is yellow.

Fagus sylvatica 'Dawycki Gold' (European Beech) 45't x 15'w. Smooth silver bark, gold foliage when the leaves first emerge in spring darkening somewhat during the season. Full sun, moist soil. Will not tolerate wet feet.

Cedrus atlantica 'Fastigiate' (Blue Atlas Cedar) 40't x 10' w. Evergreen bue-green needles on this narrow cedar. Excellent as a specimen.

Quercus robur 'Rose Hill' (English Oak) 40't x 20' w. Dark green foliage with a typical oak leaf. Inch long narrow acorns are produced in fall.

Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple' (European Beech) 50' x 15' w. Slightly more open habit than 'Dawyck Gold' with leaves that are deep purple.

Liquidambar styraciflua 'Slender Silhouette' (Sweetgum) 40' t x 10' w. They named this one right! One of the best for habit, terrific fall color and one of the narrowest!

Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire' (American Arborvitae) 15-20' t x 4-5' w. Tight evergreen foliage on a slow growing plant. Full sun-part shade. Excellent evergreen accent.

Liriodendron tulipifera 'Arnold' (Tuliptree) 50-60' h x 12-20' w. Interesting foliage on this narrow form. It's flowers are greenish- yellow and are usually found towards the top of the tree. Definitely worth  considering this one for any narrow spot.

Perennial of the Week:  Monarda
Monarda Jacob Klein
Monarda x 'Jacob Klein'
common name
: Bee Balm
size: 2-3'
interest: Red flowers (some pink)
culture: Full sun
time of year: Summer
companion plants: Purple Coneflower, Gayfeather, Russian Sage, Yarrow, Globe Thistle, Butterfly Bush

Great plant for mid to back of the border, cutting gardens and meadows. Very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.
Deadheading to lateral flower buds can prolong bloom. The foliage is a clean green with a minty scent. They can get powdery mildew once flowering has stopped. If it's a bad case, cut stalks down to clean foliage. It will spread so give them some room.
Several cultivars to choose from including 'Jacob Klein' seen here, 'Marshall's Delight' with pink flowers and good mildew resistance, 'Blue Stocking' which blooms violet purple, 'Fireball' - smaller growing (15") with deep red flowers and the dwarf 'Pink Delight' with tight foliage and pink flowers growing only to about 12".  Check them all out while in bloom this week!

Newtown's Victory Garden - Local Veggies for a Good Cause!

Victorygarden2
Lettuce, Swiss Chard, Beans, Peppers, Tomatoes...
Here's a beautiful community garden that raises fresh vegetables for the local food pantry in Newtown. Situated near the old tennis courts at Fairfield Hills, volunteers from various town departments, other organizations and private citizens have formed teams to plant vegetables which will be donated to the FAITH Food Pantry, Newtown Social Services and Nunnawauk Meadows. The Food Pantry has been feeding approximately 1000 people per month, and when most donations come in the form of canned goods, fresh vegetables from the Victory Garden are a welcome addition!

Kudos to Harvey Pessin and Lee Paulsen who have worked hard at seeing this come to fruition, Newtown Park and Rec and all the enthusiastic volunteers, including Chuck and Barbara who grew almost 1000 vegetable plants from seed for the project.

Visitors welcome! Stop by and check it out! Click for Directions and look for the article in this week's Newtown Bee.
