Sometimes choosing plant material for a job can be a challenge. Here is a flowering shrub that comes to the rescue time and time again. Spiraea - for many of us it's the staple we rely on, mainly because it just has so much going for it. Need a long bloomer? Fall color? White flowers? Pink flowers? Bright foliage? Dark green foliage? Spiraeas seem to have it all!  Here's a short refresher of these versatile plants.

Native -  Try Spiraea latifolia (Meadowsweet) Useful for naturalizing in wet meadows. Native to eastern U.S.

Riotous Color - S. japonica 'Magic Carpet' Yellow-green foliage with a noticeable red tinge to new growth. Pink flower clusters in June. 'Gold Flame' is another larger growing yellow-leaved choice.

Understated - For something less flashy try S. fritschiana 'Pink Parasols'. Dusty pink flower clusters on this one. It even does quite well in a shady site.

Smaller Sizes - S. alpina (Alpine Spiraea) and S. japonica 'Little Princess', perfect for the bottom tier or those little nooks.

Fine Texture - Try S. 'Ogon' (a.k.a. 'Mellow Yellow') Willow shaped yellow foliage, white flowers very early. Terrific for color contrast in the garden.

Outstanding Fall Color - Most have great fall color like S. betulifolia 'Tor' (Birchleaf Spiraea) with white flowers in June, orange-red fall color. 'gold flame' is another great choice

Old Fashioned - Try 'Snowmound' or S. prunifolium (Bridalwreath Spiraea)

Deer Resistance - All are usually avoided by deer!

Perennial of the Week:  Salvia nemerosa
Salvia MayNight
Salvia n. 'Blue Hill'

common name: Meadow Sage
size: 18-24" tall
interest: Blue flowers spikes

culture: Full sun,
time of year: June-August
companion plants: Yarrow, Peony, Spiraea, Coreopsis, Coneflower and Ornamental Grasses

Fabulous blue flowers on this full sun perennial. Plant in a sunny spot in well-drained soil  Dead-heading will encourage a longer bloom time. If older plants open up or get leggy, cut them back to basal growth after initial flowering.  This will keep them looking their best and may even encourage more flowering. Plant them in a large group for a nice effect.
