Seen on the Plateau - Amazing Azaleas!
|
 |
Top left-right: 'Komo-Kulshan', 'Bixby', 'Mother's Day', 'Purple Splendor'
Bottom left-right: 'Blaauw's Pink', 'Vito', 'Devault', 'Kiusianum' | Don't miss out on the large variety of specialty and evergreen azaleas down on the "plateau" in Newtown. You'll see block after block of different varieties - dwarf reds, mid-sized bi-colors and larger double salmon-pinks. Check out University of Virginia's page on planting and after-care of Azaleas and Rhododendron.
'Komo-Kulshan' A dwarf Japanese Azalea with a mounding habit growing about 2' tall and 3-4' wide. It will be covered with bright pink flowers with light pink centers. Also known as Kyushu Azalea, it has been used in gardens for centuries.
'Bixby' is another dwarf compact variety with red flowers growing about 2' tall x 3-4' wide over time. A very hardy plant for New England, it has dark green leaves turning deep red in fall. Clusters of flowers are a reliable source of red in spring. Nice to place this one in the front of the border, or planted in a large group.
'Mother's Day' is also a red Azalea growing 2-3' tall and wide. Small enough to tuck into sunny spots that need some spring color. It has large, semi-double vivid red flowers. A classic!
'Purple Splendor' is an early to mid-season bloomer growing to about 4 x 4'. Pinky-purple tubular flowers have a deeper hued center.
'Blaauw's Pink' is a larger grower reaching about 5 x 5'. It is a mid-season bloomer with lightly scented double salmon-pink flowers with a darker pink blotch.
'Vito' was taken from cuttings, with permission of course, off a property in Pound Ridge, NY over 25 years ago. Chuck decided to name this after the property's owner - Vito. One of our first 'Vito's has been in Chuck's yard for about 12 years and is only about 3' tall x 5' wide. A reliable bloomer (strong violet purple) it does very well in light shade. 'Vito' is only available at Planters' Choice!
 | Azalea 'Devault'
|
'Devault' is another one of those Planter's Choice exclusives. Named after Mrs. Devault from Easton, the cuttings were taken from her plant on Judd Road. Flowers have light pink margins fading to a white center. A beautiful bi-colored flower - perfect for understated delicate color.
'Kiusianum' has lavender-pink flowers May-June. Another dwarf Japanese variety that is a small-medium sized grower reaching about 2-3' tall. A softer pink it looks great with Blue Spruce such as 'Globosa' or 'Montgomery'!
There are so many other Azaleas - come see them all - and don't miss the soon-to-bloom deciduous azaleas!

Workshop: School Grounds Turfgrass Management, June 23rd | UCONN Extension announces Turfgrass Management Workshop for School Grounds When: June 23, 2011 Where: Hartford County Extension Center, West Hartford
Last year the Connecticut legislature passed a law banning lawn care pesticide applications on the grounds of day care centers, elementary and middle schools (grade 8 and lower) as a result of residents' concerns about children's health and the environment. This ban went into effect for K-8 schools on July 1, 2010.
Many school grounds and athletic field managers are not aware of the new law and may need to develop the skills to successfully manage school grounds and athletic fields in a new way. Click on the link below for more information about this important workshop and to register.
