News from Watertown: The Cycle Starts

Field planting
Now that the spring digging push has subsided, our field crews turn their attention to planting the next crop of trees. After the ground preparations are completed the planter is attached to the tractor and steadily plows a furrow so the trees can be planted to the proper depth and then sweeps at the rear of the planter back fill the furrow.  Once the row is completed the crews must straighten and "walk-in" the trees (pack in around the base with their feet to push out any air pockets).  Another crew works hand hoeing to level out the ridge in the middle of the row and to pick out any rocks in the middle of the row. Once the entire tree crop is planted the trees are fertilized and pruned to get them started for the growing season.  Planting is a multiple step process that ensures Planters' Choice grown trees meet or exceed your quality expectations.

Perennial of the Week:  Aquilegia x biedermeier
Aquilegia x Biedermeier
Aquilegia. x biedermeier (Columbine)
common name
: Columbine
size: 10-16"
interest: Spurred flowers, several colors on compact plants.
culture: Moist rich soil, sun-part shade
time of year: May-June
companion plants: Bleeding Heart, Cranesbill, Foxglove, Peony, Jacob's Ladder, Lady's Mantle, Iris...

Great in the spring border or woodland garden tucked in here and there adding long-lasting spurred flowers that hover on thin stems high above the compact foliage. Pinks, blues and whites - makes unusual cut flowers, lasting a week or more.  Planted in threes makes more of an impact. Moist soil that is well drained is what they love, in sun or part shade, but avoid hot afternoon sun. Yes, they are susceptible to leaf miner as the season progresses, but the foliage on heavily affected plants can be cut back to the gound and new growth will emerge fairly quickly. Our native Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis ('Little Lanterns' seen way below) is less affected by it. Despite this, Columbine is a great plant to grow - you're customers will love them!

Marks Turf Tips: Be Prepared for What May Come!

slugsIt never hurts to be prepared for what the wet weather brings especially when it comes to fungus on turf grass. It is always best to anticipate favorable conditions for disease development such as what we just had with excessive rain and now heat and resulting humidity.  So now is the time to apply a fungicide to your lawns such as Eagle 0.62G to prevent devastating death and destruction of your customer's lawns!

Time and money spent on annuals and perennials should also be protected from slugs and snails as they love these moist conditions! Products like Earth-tone Slug and Snail Control by Espoma can protect your beautiful flowers from the ravenous appitite of those slimey slugs and snails!
