Planters' Choice Grown:  Spring Blooming Shrubs
Spiraea prunifolium
Spiraea prunifolium 3 gallon (left) and seen in full bloom in the landscape.
When in bloom there is something about an old fashioned Bridalwreath Spiraea that warms the heart. Planted at many homes throughout the last century, it's a plant our great-grandmothers surely enjoyed. Their thin branches are covered with teeny white clusters of flowers at the beginning of May. The leaves are a glossy dark green and turn a nice multi-yellow/orange in fall.  Flowers last about 2 weeks afterwhich it serves as a good background plant, as seen above. It is quite adapatable - full sun to part shade, and can tolerate dry soils. Give it room to arch but keep an eye on branches that reach the ground as it will spread by layering. Dirr has his own opinion of this plant, but as many customers like a more naturalized look, I feel this shrub has its place. So come over and take a look while they're in bloom.

Other PC Grown in Bloom
:
Chaenomeles (Flowering Quince) Another old fashioned favorite!
Pieris (Andromeda)

It makes sense - northern grown quality plants at excellent prices! Look for the PC symbol in the catalog!

In Case You Didn't Already Know...We Deliver!
Sterling
The Sterling

Need help getting your plants safely to the job site? Not a problem! Planters' Choice has been delivering plants since the day we opened our doors in 1970!

Whether you're needed on the site, or don't have an available truck, we're here to help you get your job done!

We deliver from both sales yards and direct from our farms throughout Connecticut and neighboring New York and Massachusetts.

Here are some points to consider when asking for a delivery:

Our Drivers
Newtown's drivers: Brech, Matt and Warren
  • We can deliver 6 days a week and can schedule up to 5 runs per day in Newtown and 2 in Watertown depending on the distance. We can also offer multiple drops on the same truck for small orders.
  • The freight charge is based on the distance to your site from our sales yards.
  • It is your responsibility to off-load the truck at your job site. You must have men to help and a machine on site for larger material. Our driver is there to assist only.
  • We do have a crane. Because it is very difficult to crane trees off in sites with obstructions, and we often can't place trees in a hole, it is strongly advisable that  you rent a large enough loader and have an experienced operator to handle the trees to properly off-load, stage and plant your trees.
  • We do have trucks equipped with lift-gates. Please note that they can only handle trees up to 3.5-4"caliper, or evergreens that are no larger than 10/12'.

    Watertown's  driver: John
  • Please give yourself enough time to schedule a delivery. We will do our best to get you on our delivery board when you need it, but please keep in mind we can be booked for over a full week.
  • We also offer direct ship and trailer loads from our growers and farms. Call either office for more information.

So remember Planters' Choice the next time you need  your plant material delivered direct to your job site!

News from Watertown!
Viburnum watertown
Korean Spice Viburnum 3/4' (V. carlesii)

Need spring blooming shrubs? Come take a look at our wide selection of Viburnum including Fragrant Viburnum (V. carlcephalum), and Korean Spice Viburnum (V. carlesii). There is nothing like that sweet scent to welcome the longer, warmer days of spring. They are all budded up and blooming in a variety of sizes. Check out V. plicatum 'Popcorn' too. It grows somewhat smaller than the species - typically 5-8' tall and 4-7' wide. Small rounded popcorn-like clusters (2-3" diameter) of white flowers cover the shrub in spring. Perfect for the mixed border or as a foundation plant. Come check out all our spring bloomers!

FYI: Something we are very excited about is our new Kabota 520! We can now easily handle larger material.
