Camelia
Need to WOW your coastal customers? Try a Camellia! Yes, Camellia!
Camellia x National Arboretum Pink, is one of the hardiest Camelias for zone 7-9 (possibly into zone 6b).  A slow grower, it will eventually reach 8-15' tall, 5-10' wide.  They flower in spring with semi-double, sturdy, flowers that really stand out against the leathery, dark evergreen leaves.
Plant in a protected spot, sheltered from winter winds, in a partly shaded location. Camellias thrive in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and on the acidic side. Plant with some Plant Health Care 3-4-4, a good fertilizer for acid loving plants.  Guard it against winter winds - use WiltPruf and burlap.
Wherever you find that protected site, it'll make an awesome specimen!

Perennial of the Week: Polemonium reptans 'Touch of Class'

Polemonium r. 'Touch of Class'
Polemonium reptans 'Touch of Class'
common name: Variegated Jacob's Ladder
size: 14 tall x 18" wide
interest: Foliage - leaves are rimmed in white. Flowers - pink buds opening pale blue.
culture: Moist soil, well drained in part shade.
time of year: May to June for flowers, all season long for foliage.
companion plants: Aquilegia (Columbine), Hosta, Heuchera (Coral Bells), Alchemilla (Lady's Mantle)

Polemonium reptans 'Touch of Class' is a nice plant for adding contrast to the shade or woodland border. Planting it near dark foliaged plants will really make them shine. The flowers start off with small pink buds that open showing 5 light blue petals. A sport of P. 'Stairway to Heaven', these leaves have a white margin as opposed to the creamy yellow. They seldom need division, but if they do, late summer is the time to do it. Not only are they good in the border, but also in containers for a shady area. And once it's done flowering, you are left with the fabulous variegated foliage!

Lock-Up

While it is best applied when the broadleaf weed foliage is moist, Lock-Up has better soil activity than some older broadleaf herbicides even the granules don't stick to the leaf! Give us a call with any questions!
