Mark's Turf Tip: There's Still Time for Early Crab Grass Control
Lawn Newtown
Great results with 9-2-5 with 6% Iron!

The clock is ticking for crab-grass pre-emergence control!

Fact: Crab grass will start to germinate in warm areas, along curbs walkways and edging, during the last week of April. If you are serious about controlling crabgrass in your customer's lawn you need to apply a good pre-emergent NOW, yes NOW!  Try 18-0-5 with Dimension for a healthy green lawn without embarrassing crabgrass.  Dimension will work to prevent crabgrass germination as well as control freshly germinated crabgrass as well.

If you have areas where you have seeded, watch for germination - two weeks later you can apply 19-0-6 with Confront+ Dimension + fertilizer to control both crab grass and broad leaf weeds.

Don't forget to apply some 9-2-5 with 6% Iron for the darkest green lawn you can get for your customer.  Because the Nitrogen is organic based, it's slow releasing to allow for a more steady release.  Just take a look at the lawn here at Planters Choice !

Want to go fully organic?  Try our Healthy Turf 8-1-9 or Espoma Organic Lawn Food for some great results!

News from Watertown

Kwanzan Cherry
Prunus serrulata 'Kwanzan'

Duane and his crew have been busy digging up at our  farms. Both River Birch  (Betula nigra 8-10', 10-12') and Himalayan Birch (B. Jacquemonti 8/10', 10/12', 12-14'). The yard is filling up nicely with many flowering trees including Magnolias, Cherries and Dogwood. Need Evergreens? Stop by - plenty to choose from!

Some wonderful Kwanzan Cherries came down to Newtown this week from our tree farm.  Prunus serrulata 'Kwanzan' has double rosy-pink flowers that open in clusters along their branches. Excellent specimen tree to ring in spring!  They flower profusely from a young age, have that great smooth, cherry bark and respectable fall color. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil.  Give your customers something to look forward to for years to come!

Perennial of the Week: Iberis sempervirens 'Alexander's White'
Iberis Alexander's White
Iberis sempervirens 'Alexander's White'
common name
: Candytuft
size: 6-1o" H x 12-18" W
culture: Full sun and well-drained soil
interest: Evergreen foliage, pure white clusters of flowers on compact plant
best time of year: April - May

An excellent edging plant for borders, walkways and in rock gardens. Great for spilling over retaining walls or down sunny banks. Cut or sheer plants back by 1/3 after flowering to encourage new growth. Candytuft has fine evergreen foliage, or semi-evergreen in colder zones. The key to success is very well-drained soil on the alkaline side - wet soil can lead to crown rot.

'
Alexander's White' is a variety that flowers heavily. Try combining it with mid-spring flowering bulbs like Grape Hyacinths and Scilla for a fresh blue and white palette. (Remember that in the fall!)

Our plants are full and looking great - in bud and flowering!
