Winter - No Time to Relax!

Spreader Assembly
Assembling spreaders
So many people ask "What do you do in the wintertime?"  Here's a list that gives you an idea...and I'm sure we can come up with others!

  1. Inventory - we count every pot, every tree, every liner and cutting. Then Drew and Liz enter the information from all farms into the system. Think about it!
  2. Trade Shows and Symposiums - as attendees as well as exhibitors at some - Mid Atlantic Nursery Trade Show(MANTS), CT Nursery and Landscape Association Winter Symposium, CT Tree Protective Agency Annual Meeting, CT Groundskeepers Association Turf and Landscape Conference, New England Grows and the Ecological Landscape Association Conference and Eco-Marketplace - Takes time!
  3. Propagating - Geordie and his crew are busy all winter creating new woodies and perennials for us.
  4. Trimming - Peter and his crew work on our container plants at Meadowbrook; some of our sales guys tidy up the plants in our sales yard; the people in our Watertown  location are doing the same as well as cutting back all the perennials. As you saw last week, Duane and Bill are trimming our in-ground trees.
  5. Catalog! Drew spends weeks adding, subtracting, changing and making it more informative. Then a lot of us get together and have a good time forming an assembly line to get them ready for mailing.
  6. Potting - Small tissue culture plants (grown from cells of the parent plant) will arrive next week and Geordie and his crew have another job to do. Bare root shrubs start to come in March getting Peter, Geordie and additional crews started on that monumental task.
  7. Incoming nursery stock - the trees and shrubs we don't grow ourselves start arriving towards the end of February.
  8. Our lecture series - our third year.  A service to our customers as well as a break in the dreary winter.
  9. Machinery - Howard is going over all our tractors and trucks to make sure they're in top operating condition for the coming season.
  10. Pallets - Wilson has been busy repairing our pallets and building new ones.  Jamie and Roger are doing the same in Watertown.
  11. Tags - all those little plastic wrap tags and stick tags need to be printed and are made on our tagging machine by Peter and Drew and then they have to be attached.
  12. Fertilizing -Peter and Geordie's crews apply slow release fertilizer to all our pots.  The nutrients aren't released until there is enough water and heat.
  13. Val is busy compiling all the end of the year stuff for the accountant and for our own information.
  14. Weekly E-mails - Susan - keeping up with providing you with all sorts of helpful information.
  15. Kathy, Susan and Val - updating all our customer and vendor information and making room for more paper work.
  16. Doug - making sure all our plant and hard good needs are ordered, confirmed, and scheduled for delivery.
  17. Assembling sprayers, spreaders, wheelbarrows - One of Mark's favorite jobs!
  18. Snow removal...no further explanation needed!

It's amazing how busy we are.  As much as we'd all like to be lying on a nice warm sunny beach somewhere, we're here getting ready for spring - 30 more days!

 2011 Catalogs Are Here!

Catalog 2011

Yes, the new catalogs are hot off the press and in the process of being mailed out!

This year look for more detailed descriptions of plant material as well as NEW plants for Planters' Choice clearly marked.  Also included are the mulch and groundcover spacing guides plus a list of helpful organizations here in the area - all to help you out while on the job.

Regarding Barberry: Connecticut's Nursery Industry will voluntarily start phasing out the sale and production of 25 Japanese Barberry cultivars over the next three years due to their invasive potential. 'Rosy Glow' is the only cultivar on this list that  Planters' Choice has recently produced or sold. It will be phased out after this year.

In addition, please note that a few items are not priced due to the volatile market prices of raw materials.  This includes Fertilizer, Metal Edging and Burlap. Please feel free to give us a call for current pricing!

Look for them coming soon!
