Staff Tip: Evergreens for Screening
Evergreen Screening

Large 'Emerald Green' and 'Green Giant' Arborvitae and Hemlock - make instant screens!

Once the leaves fall, everyone seems to remember how important screening is.  Here are a few things to keep in mind when discussing evergreen needs with your customers.

First, from my personal experience on the landscaping end of things, rather than just offering an estimate, take your time.  I know that it's easier said than done, but inquiring about what they are really looking for, and truly listening pays dividends.  While it seems like day to day business to us, landscaping is often an emotion-based decision for our customers.  Tap into that, get excited - it's contagious, and you will see very tangible dividends!

Second, try to imagine the shade surrounding trees will cast when they are in leaf.  Hemlock and American Holly both grow in deep shade, while Norway Spruce, Dark American and Green Giant Arborvitae will tolerate moderately shady conditions.

Third, deer can be a problem, especially in the winter when there is far less for them to eat in the forest.  However, it's often actually less expensive overall to choose a suitable evergreen for the site, and apply deer repellant.  If you're not comfortable with the process, don't be afraid to hire a contractor to do so.

Lastly,  it's good to remind your customers that screening plants, just like everything else in the landscape, needs to be trimmed to maintain a full shape.  All conifers can be trimmed in early June.

Thanks for the tip, Darryl!

Inevitable but Accessible...It's that time of year!
Covered perennial house in Newtown
Covered perennial house in Newtown
Late fall is a busy time out in the sales yard. We're busy cleaning up each plant, trimming back the perennials and organizing the tree blocks to make space for the onslaught of spring trucks.

We're also working hard getting the houses covered to protect the plant material from winter snow and winds.

But remember, all this doesn't mean you're out of luck if you need plants. The houses are open and accessible! Also, bids are still being quoted and deliveries are still going out, so call us with your fall needs!

So if you're driving by and see a cloud of white, don't worry, we're here for you - year round!
