Fall Watering is Important!
Next spring's buds on Rhododendron 'Chinoides''
Rhododendron Buds
Fall is a great time for planting trees and shrubs. It's nice to get that jump start on root growth, so they are somewhat established as next spring's growing season starts. The most important thing to remember now is watering!

Of course watering is crucial at planting time, but it's also just as important to give roots the moisture they need through fall and winter as the temperatures begin to drop - right up until the ground freezes. This will promote good root growth while soil temperatures are still warm.

Going into the winter months well hydrated will help avoid winter-burn, especially on the broadleaf evergreens like holly and boxwood. Remember to keep an eye on newly planted material especially as irrigation systems are drained. They will need supplemental watering if Mother Nature doesn't provide the 'Inch per Week' they need!

You can read some more about Fall and Winter Watering here.

Speaking of hydrating: Remember we carry TreeGators,  Stocksorb, PHC Tree-Saver with water absorbing gels and Wiltpruf.
Staff Picks!                                        Val Loves Warm Colors for Fall!
Winterberry and Firethorn
Ilex v. and Pyra.
Val has been working at Planters' Choice in Newtown for 3 1/2 years. Her background is in bookkeeping and office management. A Newtown native she enjoys working close to home, and occasional gardening in her shady yard.

"Autumn is my favorite season of the year - the air seems to come alive again after the heat of summer. The foliage colors turn to warm reds, golds, yellows and oranges - my favorite colors of the spectrum.  For this reason I've chosen two different plants - Ilex verticillata (Winterberry) and Pyracantha coccinea (Firethorn).  The berries on these are gorgeous reds and oranges and just look spectacular.  When the leaves fall from the Winterberry they leave behind beautiful red berries starkly clinging to the branches. Seen against the white of winter snowfalls they're absolutely breathtaking."

Thanks Val!

Mark's Tip: Rust on Turf ...Coming soon to a lawn near you!
Rust on Turf
Rust on Turf
With the advent of cool moist weather, especially at night, there is a high probability the next thing you will see on your lawns, shoes, mowers, kids toys, and the family pet is a fungus called rust, otherwise known as: Puccinia spp.

As you can see from the photo, I have already spotted a nice example of it  in a field. The most obvious problem with rust is the nuisance it causes when it gets all over everything turning it orange.

The Bad News - it can cause some turf damage if it goes unchecked for too long.
The Good News - it can be easily treated with granular Bayleton fungicide.
