Blue-mist to the Rescue
|
Caryopteris x 'Longwood Blue' (Blue-mist Shrub) | We all know that the list of fall blooming shrubs is short and sweet. Most often, the interest comes in the form of berries and fall foliage. That's why a plant like Caryopteris x clandonensis, or Blue-mist Shrub, is so welcome this time of year.
Clusters of small feathery blue flowers are blooming right now on erect stems with aromatic gray-green leaves. They grow just about 36" which makes them easy to tuck in here and there where you may need a cool splash of color as along the foundation or in a perennial border.
Try planting them with grasses nearby which look nice with their maturing seed heads, or Amsonia x 'Blue Ice' with its golden-yellow fall color - a great pair! Since their foliage leafs out later in spring, try planting drifts of smaller spring bulbs like Muscari (Grape Hyacinths) for those customers who love the blues, or any Crocus or early Daffodil. They'll bide the time nicely until the Caryopteris leafs out fully.
Russian Sage works as a great precursor with its lavender blooms in mid to late summer. Need another plant with a fine texture and summer interest? Try Spiraea or Potentilla mixed with Slender Deutzia for a wonderful combination. Plant Caryopteris in loose, loamy soil that is very well drained, as they do not like wet feet. Prune plants back to the first two sets of buds in early spring. They are also Deer Resistant! Zone 6
We currently have two varieties at Planters' Choice: 'Dark Knight' with deep blue flowers, and 'Longwood Blue' a larger grower, 4' tall, with grey-green foliage and blue violet flowers. Northern grown, 2 gallon containers for $10.75.

Hard to Beat Japanese Maples for Fall Color!
|
Assorted Japanese Maples | Come take a look at our large assortment of Japanese maples from 'Bloodgood' to 'Shishigashira' and 'Crimson Queen' to 'Viridis'. There are all sizes and colors - something for every landscape and color palette, both boxed specimens, smaller containers and B&B.
Why are they so popular? Besides their striking fall foliage, they have great spring color as they leaf out and an interesting winter structure, and they are very low maintenance.
Looking for something beside the usual red laceleaf? Come take a look at 'Sharp's Pygmy' - with a tight, dense, green crown, both low form and on a standard; 'Mikawa Yatsubusa' - turning yellowish in autumn, a one of a kind specimen; 'Viridis' - deeply dissected green leaf with spectacular orange fall foliage; 'Fire Glow' - a small, upright red-leaved variety with unbelievable fall color.
Take a good look the next time you're in! |
Staff Picks! Kim likes Hydrangea serrata 'Bluebird'
|
Hydrangea serrata 'Bluebird' |
Kim has been working at Planters' Choice since 2002 up at our Watertown location in the office and out in production. In these 8 years she's developed an experienced eye for great looking plants!
"The attraction for me is the lacecap flower. I think it's an incredible contrast of color - a rich blue center surrounded by lighter blue petals, true blue in acidic soils. The folilage turns a nice coppery red in fall. The plant is fairly compact, staying around 4' high. Plant in part shade with moist soil. "
Thanks Kim! |
