The Spotlight's On...       Quercus x 'Regal Prince'
'Regal Prince' Oak
Quercus x 'Regal Prince'

H
ere is a great solution for a narrower shade tree that will fit nicely into small areas but still make an impact on the landscape. A cross between Swamp White Oak and English Oak 'Fastigiata', it will grow about 45' tall x 18' wide. Its mature habit is that of a strong column with dark green glossy leaves.  M. Dirr calls it "...one of the best upright oaks." It prefers well-drained soil (pH tolerant) in a site that is in full sun. Zones 4-8.
Also known as Q. x 'Long', it has very clean foliage which is resistant to powdery mildew.  Also resistant to borers, wind, ice and cold temperatures. Seen here with Carl in Watertown are some 3-3.5".  There are also some 4-4.5" in Newtown.  Consider 'Regal Prince'  the next time you need something a little different!

We have an extensive selection of larger trees, 3" to 6" caliper. Call for more information on the varieties and availability!
Staff Picks!            However you want to say it, Kathy likes Clematis!
Clematis 'Dr. Ruppel'This is Kathy's 4th season at Planters' Choice in Newtown. Deliveries, monthly statements and all the other daily office tasks go smoother because of her.  And as most of you know, dogs (and plants) are what makes Kathy smile!

"One of my all-time favorites is the flowering vine - Clematis.  From the early 'Dr. Ruppel' to the fall blooming Sweet Autumn, I love  them all.  It's a great multi-purpose vine that can be used for accenting a front light pole or mailbox to hiding a not-so-desirable fence to being a focal point climbing up a beautiful trellis. I also grow some in large heavy containers which are left out all winter and do beautifully the following spring.
Clematis (KLEM-uh-tiss or klem-AH-tis) like their tops in the sun and roots shaded with mulch or other lower-growing plants. I grow all the varieties we sell, both single and double. They all seem very happy and healthy - I can't get enough of them!" Seen here is 'Comtesse de Bouchaud'

Thanks Kathy!

'Honey Maid' Holly

Ilex x 'Honey Maid'
It doesn't take long to get sidetracked when you're out in our sales yards. You come looking for one Hydrangea and your eye catches sight of the Abelia or dwarf conifers.  I know, it happens all the time.  I went out to look for the larger B&B Clethra when I found this Ilex x 'Honey Maid'.  Glossy, variegated leaves and eventual red berries on this female holly, which was found as a sport on 'Blue Maid'.  It will slowly grow to about 8' tall x 5' wide and is hardy to Zone 5. Our are in 10 gallon containers and are a good 36" x 36". A great value at $46.00.
So feel free to wander and see what else you can find!
