Summer Watering
|
Everyone knows the importance of proper watering. Most importantly, please feel free to ask our staff about which plants are best suited for dry conditions. But even drought and heat tolerant selections still need some care to properly establish.
Roots will move to the most abundant water source when soil is not saturated, in other words, it's critical to water thoroughly so the roots sink deeper in the soil. Worried that water will run off the surface when watering trees? Try using Gator Bags, which slowly release water after being filled, allowing for more concentrated watering.
Water absorbent polymers like Aqua-Soil or Stockosorb absorb many times their weight in water, which is then pulled into the soil when it begins to dry.
Tree Saver helps new plants handle difficult conditions, and works well when transplanting. It contains the above mentioned polymers and a natural wetting agent to allow better water penetration into the soil as well. In addition, it contains mycorhizzae, a beneficial fungus that fixes itself to roots to allow better absorption of water and nutrients.
Since every jobsite is a bit different, you're always welcome to stop by either of our yards or call us with any questions - we're here to help! |
Staff Picks! Geordie Needs Fall Color! |
Nyssa sylvatica | Geordie has been working at Planters' Choice in Newtown since 2001. He is in charge of propagation and growing. He grows his own vegetables and some ornamentals at home, but his favorite garden is his meadow.
"Many people have a favorite plant based on the flower. I choose plants based on the fall color. Few plants rival Nyssa sylvatica (Tupelo, Pepperidge, Black Gum) in fall foliage display. I have seen trees with almost every color of the rainbow. Pale yellow, golden-orange to scarlet and crimson are common with the red colors dominating when sited in full sun. In addition, blue-black fruit hang in small clusters and remain after the leaves have dropped. During the rest of the year the foliage is very attractive as well. The leaves are glossy dark green with a texture. I have never seen any disease or insect problems. Black Gum is native to Connecticut and the eastern United States. Since it grows in wet locations, it is well suited to poorly aerated or compacted soils. This shade tree is an excellent alternative to Red Maple and grows in many of the same sites. The next time you are looking for a different shade tree I recommend Nyssa sylvatica".
Thanks Geordie!

The Spotlight's On... Japanese Maple 'Mikawa Yatsubusa'
|
Acer palm. 'Mikawa Yatsubusa'
 | Looking for an uncommon specimen of small stature? Well, look no further! Acer palmatum 'Mikawa Yatsubusa' is a beautiful Japanese Maple that fits the bill. In spring the light yellow-green leaves unfold, overlapping each other along the branches. They darken up by summer as you can see, then turn yellow in fall. It has a multi-branched compact habit and is very slow growing. It is often used for bonsai.
Give it a place of prominence - as the specimen tree in a foundation planting, near a deck or patio - anywhere it will be appreciated.
Site it in moist, well-drained soil where it will receive partial shade from the hot afternoon sun Water deeply and regularly until established.
Stop by Newtown and take a look, but hurry - there's just this one! |
