Lilium - The True Lily
| When you want to give your customers a real splash of long lasting color for the summer, consider Lilies - both Asiatic and Oriental. From the dwarf forms, like the Asiatic 'Painted Pixie' growing only 1.5' to the Oriental Lily 'Casa Blanca' (seen middle left) growing 4' and more - there are sizes and colors to fit in any garden design. The flowers are long-lasting, sturdy and come in an aray of colors. Massing them together makes them a show-stopper and the fragrance of the Oriental-types will waft through the yard like perfume. They also make great cut flowers. Not to be confused with Daylilies (Hemerocallis), true Lilies grow from bulbs, not rhizomes, with stiff stems and narrow leaves covering the stem from top to bottom. Sets of large showy flowers develop at the top of each stem.
Asiatic Lilies are the most common, growing from 1.5-5' tall with blooms that are 4-6" wide. Most are upward facing - so they are easily appreciated. They grow best in full sun. Sorry, no fragrance. The Asiatics have many good warm colors in yellows and oranges -pale to intense, blooming June-July. 'Orange Pixie' (seen top left and right) is a dwarf form of Asiatic Lily. It has large, up-turned, deep orange flowers with rust colored spots near the base of each petal. Its compact habit - just 12-18"makes it great for containers, small gardens and front of the border.
Oriental Lilies are fragrant and later blooming than the Asiatics. Wide petals on sturdy stalks bloom July to August. Blooms are usually whites to pinks to reds and face up, down or outwards. 'Star Gazer' (seen middle right) is crimson edged in pure white, will grow 24-36" and is very fragrant. The 'Casablanca' ( middle left) is taller and a later bloomer - August to September.
When planting lilies make sure the soil is well-drained as they hate wet feet. They also need at least a half day of sun. Plant Health Care (PHC) for Flowers will get them off to a good start. Apply a good layer of mulch or use a groundcover to keep the bulb/roots protected as they like their feet cool and their heads in the sun! Have a deer problem? Gary suggests that as the flower buds are forming begin to spray, and then again as they swell, just before they open up.

Staff Picks! Bill Likes the Mighty Oaks
|
Bill works out in the fields up in Watertown and Woodbury taking care of weed and insect control. He's been working at Planters' Choice since 1994. When it comes to music he's a wealth of knowledge and an avid collector of LPs. One of Bill's favorite trees is the Pin Oak ( Quercus palustris). It's a beautiful tree, easy to grow and can have great fall color. To Bill the Oak symbolizes strength. It reminds him of one of his favorite albums - 'From Mighty Oaks' with Ray Thomas of the Moody Blues. Groovy Man...Thanks Bill! |
