Rhododendron - The Choice is Yours

l.-r. Rhododendron 'Edith Bosley', 'Roseum Maximum', Cat. 'Album'ext here.
Rhododendron Trio

Large-leaved Rhododendron have been used in our home gardens for years. We take them for granted as they lend their evergreen foliage to help soften the edges of our houses and garages but we still are taken aback when they're in full bloom. There aren't many shrubs that have such large sturdy clusters of pinks, lavenders and whites and combined with that bold textured foliage they can't help but draw attention to themselves.  Take a look below for a quick review on our large-leaved Rhododendron selection - all CT grown right here at Planters' Choice.

Smaller size - Yakushimanum 'Yaku Prince' and 'Princess', and 'Cunningham White' - 3' tall.
Medium size - 'Chinoides' (white), 'Lavender Princess' 4' tall.
Large size - Catawbiense 'Album', 'Roseum Elegans', 'Boursault' reaching 6'+ and Rhododendron Maximum (Rosebay) and 'Roseum' which will grow approx. 15' +.
Deep Colors - 'Edith Bosley', 'Wojnar's Purple' both are dark purple, and 'Nova Zembla' is a good deep magenta-red
Good Clear Pinks - 'Scintillation', 'Janet Blair'
Wonderful Whites - 'Cat. Album', 'Cunningham's White', 'Chinoides'
Great Foliage - Rhododendron Maximum, 'Scintillation', 'Cunningham White'
Tolerant of Deep Shade -Rhododendron Maximum

Optimum Soil conditions -Acidic and rich in organic matter, moist but well drained.
Best Siting - Eastern exposure, morning sun and afternoon shade
A Great Fertilizer - PHC 3-4-4 for Rhododendron & Azaleas
The Best Pruning Practices  - Late winter/early spring (even though you'll lose some buds), or right after they finish blooming.
Best time to Plant - Spring (not the only time, but the best)
Best Mulching Practice -  Natural, non-dyed spread about 2" deep.
Pests to watch for - Black Vine Weevil and Deer.

Stop by and see them in bloom and try to choose just one!

" When it comes to plants, mine is a Love-Hate affair...I love to buy them, and I hate to see them sit in our nursery. I'm always happy to see them leave on the back of your trucks.
We have worked hard to maintain the quality and consistency of our material and to broaden the mix at both locations.
So load up and come back for some more and I will keep buying!"

Thanks Doug!
