Knock Outs & Drifts - Roses for Everyone
|
Peach Drift | Hey, when you pass by the roses in the yard, do you normally look the other way? Or, when you need to fill a sunny spot with a low maintenance plant, do you think of everything BUT a rose? Then you may be missing out on a good thing! Let's look at both the Drift Roses and Knock Outs. Both are easy care, long blooming plants with great foliage and colors to complement any landscape.
Drift Roses are repeat bloomers, disease resistant, winter hardy and low maintenance. They are a cross between ground-cover and miniature roses. They have a mounding habit growing about 1-2' x 2-3' wide. They bloom mid-spring to mid-fall, come in a variety of great colors and are, of course, disease resistant and winter hardy. They are great for small gardens and planters and will also fit nicely into a mixed border, courtyard or entryway garden. They are naturally small, however by pruning them back to about 6" early spring, it will help keep them neat. Regular dead-heading will keep them clean while encouraging re-bloom. We currently carry four varieties of the Drifts - Coral, Peach, Pink and Red. 2 gallon for $17. Consider Drift Roses the next time you need to brighten up an area with low-maintenance, season-long color!
Other easy care roses are, of course, the Knock Outs. They are bred by Wisconsiner Bill Radler to have superior disease resistance, a long bloom time and no need to dead head (a.k.a self cleaning). They are winter hardy to Zone 5 and heat tolerant throughout the country. Besides their incredible flowers, they have great foliage which is black-spot resistant - one major reason why roses have gotten a bad rap in the past.
l.-r. Sunny Knockout, Rainbow Knockout, White Out, Knock Out, Pink Knockout | Knock Outs will grow to 3-4' tall x 3-4' wide if left unpruned. Cutting them back early spring to about 18" is recommended to help them perform their best.
Choose from: 'Knock Out' & 'Double Knock Out' - cherry red 'Pink Knock Out' & 'Double Pink' - bright pink 'Sunny Knock Out' - bright yellow fading to cream. This is the only fragrant Knock Out. 'White Out' - single white 'Rainbow Knock Out' - pink with a yellow center
Plant roses in full sun, or in a spot where they'll receive at least 4 hours of direct sun per day. Start them off right with lots of organic matter in soil that is on the looser side and well draining. Good fertilizer like PHC Healthy Start, Flower Saver Plus 3-4-3, or PHC for Flowers 12-16-12 will properly condition the soil and give them the beneficial miccorhizae they need. A good layer of a natural undyed mulch every spring will keep roots cool and moist, weeds down and slowly decompose amending the soil.

Staff Picks! Dave Loves His Daylilies!
| Dave is Planters' Choice General Manager
'Stella D'Oro' Daylily | . He likes to garden at home, especially vegetables.
One of Dave's favorite plants is Hemerocallis - Daylilies.
"I find that this plant has great form in the landscape and a wonderful color palette with its blooms and is very versatile. It can be used en masse for a dramatic effect or as a single accent plant. Hemerocallis has very few insect or disease issues. One of my favorite varieties are 'Stella D' Oro' with its golden yellow blossoms and being a re-bloomer it can be enjoyed for a much longer time. Another favorite is 'Barbara Mitchell' which is a taller variety that's orchid pink with a yellow throat. I have both varieties in my home garden and enjoy seeing the blooms sway in the breeze."
Research other Hemerocallis at the American Hemerocalis Society website. Thanks Dave! |
