6 Steps to a Greener Lawn!
Pre-Emergents

Planters' Choice Intensive Turf Care Program
 Step 1.
Crabgrass Pre-emergent with fertilizer. Apply late March through about the end of April. (Dimension can be used as an early Post-Emergent into May.)
-Team Pro with 22-0-6 fertilizer 12,500 sq. ft.
-Dimension with 18-0-5 fertilizer 10,600 sq. ft.
-Barricade with 16-0-8 fertilizer 12,500 sq. ft.

Step 2.
Broadleaf weed control (weeds that are not grasses). Apply May through early July.
-Trimec without fertilizer 10,000 sq ft.
-Lockup with 19-0-6 fertilizer 12,500 sq. ft. (It can be applied to new seeding 2 weeks after
germination is first noticed for Rye & Bluegrass, see the label)

Step 3.
Surface insect control. Apply mid-May through August. Provides control of chinchbugs, sod webworm, mole crickets, billbugs, hyperodes, others.
-Talstar (Bifenthrin) with 16-0-8 fertilizer, 7,500 to 15,000 sq. ft.

Step 4.
Grub control for the Fall. Kill grubs in fall and you won't have them in the spring. Apply June through Aug 15th. (If you have grubs in the Spring, use Dylox)
-Merit with 20-0-5 fertilizer 11,100 to 14,000 sq. ft.
-Merit with 0-0-7 (There's no nitrogen so it won't push growth.) 11,000-14,200 sq. ft.

Step 5.
Fertilizer for late Summer/early Fall (August through September)
-20-0-5 fertilizer 10,000 to 13,000 sq. ft.
-10-6-4 fertilizer 5,000 to 7,000 sq. ft.

Step 6.
Fertilizer for late Fall. (October through November)
-12-25-12 fertilizer 10,000 sq. ft.
-16-25-12 fertilizer 12,500 sq. ft.

Notes:
1. If no grub control was applied last fall, check for grubs in the Spring and apply  Dylox if needed. Merit will not kill grubs in the spring.
2. A second, late Summer/early Fall application of broadleaf weed control works well as there is more translocation to roots at this time.
3. Adjust pH according to soil test. Plants can't get the fertilizer if pH is wrong. Some lawns have had too much lime and are alkaline!

So there you have it! Any questions? Ask Mark K. in Newtown the next time your in or email him -   mkokinchak@planterschoice.com

Staff Picks!
This year we thought we'd celebrate our 40th anniversary with some of the people that have helped make Planters' Choice what it is today. Every week one member of our knowledgeable staff will talk about a plant or product that they really like. So here you go starting with Barb!

Lion's Head Maple in Fall
'Shishigashira' in Fall
Barbara O' Connor has worked in Newtown as Chuck's right-hand person for the past 36 years!

"One of my favorite small trees is Acer palmatum Shishigishira, Lion's Head Maple.  Several years ago I took home a little "orphan" that no one wanted because it had a bad scar on it.  The scar has healed beautifully and the tree is thriving even though it's planted on a slope with very poor soil. As a result it grows very slowly- which is what I want it to do.  The dark green leaves are tightly crinkled all summer and in fall it turns different shades of orange, yellow and red- the colors varying each year.  It's pest resistant and so far the deer haven't eaten it (knock on wood)!"

Thanks Barb! Read more about 'Shishigashira' here.
