Happy 40th Planters' Choice!

 The early years
Yesterday, March 4th, was the 40th Anniversary of Planters' Choice Nursery! It was started in 1970 by Chuck Newman, first growing vegetables and mums then branching out into nursery stock with one prop house and two hoop houses. It has now grown from that propagation nursery with Juniper, Hemlock, Rhododendron, and Azaleas to becoming one of the largest wholesale growers and suppliers of shade and ornamental trees, evergreens, shrubs, perennials, wetland and native plants in Connecticut.
Did you know that 65% of what is sold at Planters' Choice is grown on our farms? There are 275 acres in total consisting of close to 200 hoop houses, 2 sales yards and 3 tree farms. We grow over 500 varieties of perennials, ferns and grasses - producing more than 150,000 perennial units per year. We also grow about 100 different varieties of trees, including shade, ornamental and evergreen, and dig approximately 6,000 each spring!

NOW...What a Week!

Trucks were lined up each day full of deciduous trees, dwarf conifers and specimen Japanese Maples including 'Green Hornet' and 'Orangeola'.
Approx. 17,000 rooted cuttings arrived to be unpacked and potted in 1 gallon containers, both shrubs and herbaceous material including Hellebores, Azaleas, and Rhododendron.
The first of many blocks of spring flowering trees. Flowering Dogwood, Redbud, Serviceberry, and Callery Pear ('Cleveland Select' seen far left). Many of these are larger 4" - 5.5" caliper.
Unloading Japanese Maples and lining out a variety of dwarf conifers along the 'Main Road' in Newtown.
Watertown is geared up to start spring potting of perennials. Plenty were potted over the summer of 2009, so they're already rooted and ready to go. And there's a mix of spring flowering material as well as grafted ornamentals that will be arriving next week.
