  NOW in the Greenhouse
 prop1
Being surrounded by New England's winter palette, ie. old snow, slush and frozen mud, makes us crave any color out of the neutral range.

Take a look in the greenhouses - they're filling up with perennials and woodies that have been propagated throughout the fall and winter. Right now Geordie and his crew are concentrating on Juniper and Boxwood, but it was the thousands of tiny perennials  that caught my attention. Their needs are monitored and an IPM program followed daily to assure that healthy plants are ready for our customers in a steady supply throughout the season.

From Hakonechloa to Geraniums they're filling the houses with a mosaic of color and texture, not to mention a whiff of spring and the promise of warmer weather ahead.

A Class Act for Shadey Sites

 polemonium touch of class
One of our newer perennials is a native Jacob's Ladder Polemonium reptans 'Touch of Class'.  A wonderful woodland plant that is perfect for shadey gardens. Grown mostly for its foliage, the variegated leaves add season-long contrast to neighboring plants. The flowers are pale blue, opening from pink buds in spring.  It was discovered in Kensington, CT as a branch mutation on P. reptans 'Stairway to Heaven', but with white edged foliage instead of cream. It also is a heavier bloomer than the parent plant. It will grow about 14" tall x 18" wide. Try it out in the middle-to-front of  the border.  Plant it with Astilbe, Columbine, Carex, Hosta, Siberian Iris or Heuchera for eye catching combinations.

Hear more about this and other varieties from Gary at his Perennial Lecture on January 26th.
