Spark - Message from Religious Education
| | Rev. Dara OlandtMinister of Religious EducationOctober 2012Greetings! As we begin October there are many wonderful events and activities happening in Religious Education at UUCM! Last Sunday in Religious Education, children and youth of all ages joined together for a unique "All Children and Youth Worship." Our theme was Harvest and the Jewish festival of "Sukkot" (pronounced "sue-coat"). On the lower porch, we gathered in the sunshine to create our own "house of welcome". With sheets and blankets, lights and pumpkins, a few spare doors and wreathes of leaves, we created a unique, outdoor sanctuary. Brightly colored leaves were decorated with blessings and statements of gratitude. These hung from the walls of the "welcoming house". Kids, youth and adults piled in to appreciate the shade of the outdoor "home" we built together. With singing, reflections and snacks we celebrated the turning of the season. Pictures will be forthcoming shortly and the leaves of gratitude will be displayed in our hallways. Thank you to everyone who donated volunteer time, harvest-theme materials and helping hands! UU mini-fundraiser Saturday with carwash tickets Saturday night I will set up a table in the foyer as a mini fundraiser with a target to raise $500. We will be offering 40 tickets to Matt & Jeff's car wash in Novato. Their full service car wash costs $25 and they will donate half to the UU congregation. - 40 tickets brings us $500 - Each ticket covers washing the inside, outside and dressing the tires. They do a great job. Winter rains are coming so we can be prepared. Enjoy the wonderful music from Milton's ensemble, raise money and enjoy a clean car too. Fabulous! Peace, Walter Littrell

North Bay UU Revival - October 14
| |
See Sunday Worship service description for details.
|
Book Group | | Our UUCM Book Group meets on third Wednesdays, 7:30 to 9 PM in the Clara Barton Room. We welcome newcomers to join our lively discussions.
For October 21 we will read The Wordy Shipmates by Sara Vowell, in which she explores our Puritan roots and their relevance to current predicaments. John Winthrop and his shipmates are seen as far different from our uptight image, she holds. Rather "they are highly literate, deeply principled, and surprisingly feisty." Carol Littrell will lead the discussion and Karen Greener will present choices for November.
|
Call for Wesley Grant Proposals | | Members: Don't forget to turn in your Wesley Fund requests for any amount up to about $2000. The board will consider all proposals at its October 23 meeting. Please send your completed proposal by Oct. 15 to Julie Van Winkle, Board secretary. Either leave it in her box in the community room, or send by email: julievw@comcast.net.
Details in last week's Special Announcement.

Pastoral Care - STAR
| | Safe Transport And Reimbursement "STAR" Program Marin Whistlestop's new STAR Volunteer driver program reimburses drivers 35 cents per mile. Here's how it works: "Driver drives rider to and/or from church, appointment, other activity. Rider fills out and signs a form. Driver completes and submits the form to STAR. They send the money to rider (with a new form for the next month.) Rider gives the money to driver. STAR does not match drivers and riders. Both rider and driver have to complete an initial application.
For more info call 454-0969, or go to Volunteer Driver Program. |
UUCM Heritage Project | |
 | Members from the 1950s. (taken in 2003) |
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin is thrilled to be launching the UUCM Heritage Project this Fall. The mission of the project is to collect oral histories, written memories, photos and documents related to the history of our congregation. We will start the project by collecting these interviews and materials in private interviews. We can set up a time to meet with the interviewee directly after church or at another time that is convenient for all parties. This year, 2012/2013, we will be focusing on the first twenty-five years of our history.
