Chip's Clips
| | Reverend Chip Wright September, 2012
The summer is ending and our 2012-13 church year begins. I am looking forward to all of the new energy and excitement ahead as we come together this year. We welcome one another back into a full church program at our anointment service on Sept. 9th, and we also will be welcoming a new staff member, Rev. Dara Olandt. She started her new position in our RE program on the 15th of Aug. so some of you may have already had the chance to meet her. A recent graduate of Starr King School, Dara will be operating under the title of MRE or 'Minister of Religious Education' rather than DRE or Director. I know you will enjoy her and I look forward to what she will bring to our religious education program here at UUCM.
We also will be operating our Music program through the rest of this year differently. As you know our music director, Phil Hildreth, moved to Florida last summer so until we find a new choir director various members of the choir, Milton, and a few possible new directors here and there, will be filling in. We hope to have located someone to fill this critical role by the end of Jan 2013 so our choir folks can go back to just enjoying singing which they do so well!
And, we will add another new face to the mix. Stepping into the role as a teaching congregation, we will be hosting an intern this year, Irene Boczek, a Starr King student. She will be with us for the whole church year through June. She also will be bringing her energy and unique talents to our church life and into our pulpit. Please welcome her as well when you get the chance to meet.
So see ya'll on Sept. 9th as we start what promises to be another year of exciting abundance!
Rev. Chip

Spark! - Religious Education Connection
| | I am joyed to join UUCM as your Minister of Religious Education! My name is Dara Olandt. I am a life-long Unitarian Universalist and a minister in fellowship with the Unitarian Universalist Association. I received my master's of divinity degree from Starr King School for the Ministry in 2010, and have been a UU religious educator since 2006. To UUCM I bring a passion for supporting spiritual growth and religious education for seekers of all ages! I look forward to the journey of learning, growing and discovery that will take place over the course of our year together! Though I am a newcomer, the UUCM tradition of offering vibrant spiritual growth and religious learning for all ages continues! Religious Education at UUCM will to continue to offer something for everyone. Please look forward to Sunday morning nursery care, children and youth religious education, YRUU, multi-generational worship services and creative events, along with Small Groups for adult connection and growth. This year we'll also be finding ways to explore "Beloved Community" - a term made popular by Martin Luther King, Jr. In "Beloved Community" all are valued, and are connected to the larger whole. This theme recalls the purpose and promise of Unitarian Universalism! It reminds us that care for ourselves, for one another, and for the larger world is important because all are linked in the whole of life. I look forward to creatively exploring "Beloved Community" together this year. Also, I warmly welcome you to share with me your hopes, dreams and questions regarding Religious Education at UUCM. You can contact me directly at mre@uumarin.org or via cell phone at (415) 374-0656. RE updates for this week: CONNECT: Be an RE helper! If you are interested in being a Religious Education teacher or assisting with our RE program, please email Dara at mre@uumarin.org or call (415) 374-0656. SAVE THE DATES: "Ingathering Service" on Sunday, September 9th. Bring stones and water for this beloved intergenerational "service! I will see you there. Also, please stay-tuned for a formal "RE Kick-Off" and "Meet and Greet" with me on September 16. This will be a great time to mingle, ask questions and learn more about what's in-store in RE this year. Details for this gathering will be shared soon. As September arrives, I wish for you and your family several quiet moments wherein you can pause, catch your breath, and continue to appreciate the simple gifts of the late summer. Bright Blessings, Rev. Dara, Minister of Religious Education mre@uumarin.org Phone: Office (415) 479-4131 / Cell: (415) 374-0656 |

Building Repair Workshop - Sept. 22
| | I am scheduling a Building Repair Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 22 between 9 AM and 3 PM. Maybe lunch. I invite all to let me know if you are coming. Also let me know what projects you have in mind getting done and any materials and tools you need to have available but won't bring yourself. This will help me to muster materials and tools.
Suggested work:
1. Repair the slope between the Foyer and the long hallway which is wearing down and showing chicken wire reinforcing.
2. Possible calking or other repairs to the junction between the lower deck surface and the building walls. Also how to go about waterproofing this junction.
Many other projects - I will send out a expanded list as soon as I get more ideas.

Members Welcoming Visitors
| | The Task force on Membership is planning to strengthen and energize how we engage with visitors and new attendees in a road to membership process. We are inviting volunteers to help welcome visitors after the service. A training workshop for greeters and welcome volunteers will be scheduled in October. This is a limited commitment (one Sunday a month?) and is a great way to help! For further information or to volunteer, please contact Nani Ranken. nani@ranken.com or 898-8558.

Book Group
| | Our UUCM Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month, 7:30 to 9:00 PM in the Clara Barton Room. We welcome new members. Contact: Nani Ranken: 898-8558. The book for September 19 is The Path to Power by Robert Caro, winner of the 1982 National Book Critics Circle Award. "This is the story of the rise to national power of a desperately poor young man from the Texas Hill Country. The Path to Power reveals in extraordinary detail the genesis of the almost superhuman drive, energy, and ambition that set LBJ apart. It follows him from the Hill Country to New Deal Washington, from his boyhood through the years of the Depression to his debut as Congressman, his heartbreaking defeat in his first race for the Senate, and his attainment, nonetheless, at age 31, of the national power for which he hungered."
