Seminary Student Sunday, Hosted by Rev. Chip Wright
Carol Thomas Cissel, UU Seminarian, Pacific School of Religion, Master of Divinity 2013 with Worship Associate Dianne Estrada

While we all strive towards relationships filled with love, compassion, joy and forgiveness - sometimes anger gets in the way. It may develope from unresolved fear or sadness. Or, its roots may be deeply planted in frustration or resentment. Whatever the cause, anger is a reality.  Join us to share our ideas, attitudes and perspectives on how to deal with anger. One of the hidden "monsters under the bed.

May, 2012

Here we are in the heart of spring heading into our church retreat and the last month of full church programing before the summer hits.  May is the month of Mother's Day and of the greens -- this green, that green, every kind of green -- as spring comes to full blossom and the young leaves all sing!  The vineyards are green once more as are the maples.  The grass is an inch longer each morning as it reaches out for the longer days.

Watching the turning of the planet into this cycle once again I can't help but smile. Yet inside I am also aware that these seasons we have trusted so long to stand with us, like us, are poised on a narrow ledge.  We, the human animal, have affected so much on this little blue ball we live on that these ancient and marvelous life affirming and life giving cycles may shift dramatically and never return as we once knew them.  But I also trust that we can make the changes we must to avert stepping off this ledge.

We will be showing the DVD, Deep Green, at the retreat which I shared earlier in the church year at an Adult RE class. I hope all of you who have not seen it will take the time to do so.  And to those of you who have seen it, come see it again or join in the conversation afterwards.  If you're not coming to the retreat you still can come out just for the film.  This film is a good and up-to-date look at the reality of our times and some of the choices being made to live through them and come out for the better on the far side.  Together, we at UUCM, if we choose to be, can be a part of the positive outcome in this new time and challenge we face.  See you all there.

Rev. Chip

May, 2012

This is a bittersweet period for me as I'm increasingly aware of our dwindling time together. June 3rd is when I "bridge" to my next adventure along with our "bridging" youth, Bea Meluch, Maggie Shepherd and Anna Van Winkle. I will still be in the office through mid-June, so please stop by to say goodbye if I don't see you on June 3rd.

As I've explained to several of you, I'll be taking a hiatus as a member from UUCM for about a year in order to give plenty of time and space for the new DRE to establish his/her program. This transition time is important and I trust that you will all support the new DRE and help him/her to continue to make our RE program a success.

Now we turn to the current schedule of events.

I hope that the vast majority of you will be enjoying the UUCM Annual Retreat May 4-6th. For those that show up at UUCM on Sunday, May 6th, there will be a combined RE program for all grades in the Wright room. Nursery care will still be provided.

On Sunday, May 20th, we'll have a very special presentation from the "Hungry Owl" program, which is part of "Wildcare". They'll be bringing a live owl and telling our students about the mysterious world of owls and how important they are to our ecosystems. Grades PreK through 6 will attend this program in the Wright Room during RE.

Turning now to Adult Education, the "Building Your Own Theology" class participants have been taking time to deepen and clarify their spiritual connections to themselves, each other and the larger world. There is some interest in an ongoing exploration of themes raised in the class and this would be open to anyone who is interested.

Small group circles continue to meet through the summer with lay leaders facilitating the groups. There's always more room for new members.

See you on the hill!

With love and light,

Linda Haumann, DRE

2012 Pledge Drive: Much to be thankful for!
Thanks to the generosity of our members and pledging friends, this year's Pledge Drive raised $159,816 in pledges for the upcoming church year!

Pledges are UUCM's largest source of income-about 66% annually.  Your pledge helps provide inspiring Sunday services with great music, quality religious education for children and adults, and an inviting, sacred space.

About 100 households have turned in pledges to date, but 21 households have not pledged yet. If yours is one of these, it's not too late to renew your commitment to UUCM by submitting your pledge! Remember, no money is due yet; we just need to know your financial commitment for the upcoming church year. Fill out this pledge form and return it to the office ASAP.

Registration Open for 2012 UU Living Legacy Civil Rights Pilgrimage

The next UU Living Legacy Civil Rights Pilgrimage is scheduled for October 6-13, 2012, and registration is now open. This unique bus trip is much more than a Civil Rights history tour through Alabama and Mississippi. We will be visiting historic sites and meeting veterans of the Civil Rights Movement, and but will also be spending time together and with guests exploring what racism, white privilege, and barriers to equality look like today in Southern towns we visit---and in our own hometowns.

For more information and to register, please visit www.uulivinglegacy.org. Register early - costs are discounted for those who register before May 15th.
