Sunday Worship Service
| Feb. 5, 10:30 am: "The Dream of the Diaspora" Rev. Zoltán Kopándi-Benczédi with Rev. Chip Wright The expression 'diaspora' describes people of a common ethnicity who moved away from their home community, and are currently living among foreigners. In the Unitarian Church of Transylvania, the Diaspora is used for ethnic Hungarians of the Unitarian faith who are spread in areas where there is a vast Romanian majority, and where in many cases it is difficult to build autonomous, self supporting church communities. I am a Diaspora minister, living in the once thriving, now remote Zsil Valley in Romania. In doing community building in the Diaspora, we must adopt the visionary attitude of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which starts with "I have a dream." The dream must be big, but also realistic, speaking to the way the congregation imagines its own church in the future. It is hard work, but it will be successful if done by people who believe their work is led by God's Providence. Bio: The Rev. Zoltán Kopándi-Benczédi is the 2011-2012 Balázs Scholar at Starr King School for the Ministry, and is minister to congregations in Lupény-Vulkán, Déva and Vajdahunyad, Transylvania. He hopes to return at the end of his scholarship year with new insights into the connection between church life and community development, particularly work done in multicultural environments.

February, 2012
This is my favorite month for birthdays! It has Charles Darwin's and Abraham Lincoln's, and George Washington's birthday as well. I am also a February child born on the 13th of the month right between Darwin's & Lincoln's and Valentine's Day. February also has Groundhog's Day which many of you know is my favorite holiday.
This February 11th at 6:00 PM we also kick off our first Crab feed-Auction-dance extravaganza!! This is the biggest and most important fundraiser of our year here at UUCM and the first time we have combined these things. So if you haven't already sent in your RSVP do so right away. There will be great food, lots of fun and tons of great items and services. You are bound to find one or two of them to your liking and in your price range. There will be wonderful music by a local band for those of you who like to dance! So come one and all and join in the festivities and in the process help support this Liberal religious community to flourish here in Marin!
Also at the end of the month Feb. 19 and 26th after the services I will be offering an Adult Ed workshop, titled 'Deep Green.' We will view and discuss the DVD, "Deep Green," which points out some interesting things about global warming and how we can help to make its impact lighter on the planet. There will be a light lunch. The plan is to make this a positive conversation with an eye towards what we could do as a religious community to join in and help. I hope I see all of you there!

February, 2012
As I write this column, many of us are hoping for more rain despite the unseasonably warm and dry weather. By the time you read this, you may need to send your child to RE with raincoats so that they can still enjoy the wonders of nature outside on our hill. Here are some highlights for RE for February:
Speaking of rain and water, the 4-6th graders have been learning about water as a precious resource on our planet. On February 5th after the worship service, this class will host a fundraiser for the UUSC's "Clean Water Rights for All" and charitywater.org. Please visit this class's table during coffee hour and contribute what you can!
Also on Feb. 5th, the Adult Ed committee will host another "New to UU" session in the Minister's Office from noon-1:30 pm. This session is not limited to new and/or visiting folks. Everyone is welcome! Topics that will be explored:
- What attracted you to UU? This congregation?
- Overview of Unitarian Universalism
- Programs at our UUCM congregation.
- How can I get more involved?
- How do I become a member?
A light lunch is provided and childcare is also provided with advance sign ups: dre@uumarin.org.
Don't miss out on our biggest fundraiser of the year on February 11th! Our Crab Feed and Auction!! Visit the "Welcome Table" in our foyer to find out more about how you can get involved!
On February 12th the first through 6th grade classes will be taking another field trip down to Country Villa (rain or shine!)
The beginning of ski week is Feb. 19th, so we'll have all the children together in RE that day and I will facilitate a special worship called an "All Children's Worship" in the Wright room during RE class time.
Now we switch to the Adult Education program. "Deep Green" conversations will be offered after worship service on Feb. 19th and 26th from noon- 3pm. A light lunch will be included. Please RSVP to Linda Haumann, dre@uumarin.org so that we know how many people to expect.
"Build Your Own Theology"; a course to help you define what is true for you regarding your faith, will be offered in the spring. Please mark your calendars for the following dates: April 2, 16, 23, 30 and May 7: 6:45-8 pm at UUCM.
There are two small group circles that meet regularly and we're always open to start another group. Small group is a way to get to know other members while deepening our own spiritual search in a more intimate setting. Please contact me if you're interested in starting another group!

Carol Littrell will lead a discussion of Nemesis by Chalmers Johnson. Johnson, a political scientist, is author of Blowback and The Sorrows of Empire. "In Nemesis, the bestselling and final volume in what has become known as the Blowback Trilogy, he shows how imperial overstretch is undermining the republic itself, both economically and politically."
