Issue #152

Sunday Worship Servicechalice

January 29, 10:30 am: "Neighbors Helping Neighbors"

Suzanne Walker, Assoc. Dir. St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin, with Worship Associate Joan Nelson

UUCM members who prepare food and dine with the ladies at the emergency shelter, and others who have donated so generously to our Social Concerns "Homeless Fund," will learn about these folks who fit neither the Marin stereotype nor the homeless stereotype. Suzanne (and possibly one or two of her clients) will tell us about their struggles, their talents and their humanity.

Most new sermons on the "web sermons index" are audio. Older sermons are text.  If you want a text version of an audio sermon please contact the minister.

UUCM Emergency Women's Shelter Dinner
Shelter report:

Homeless folks are experts on adapting to difficult situations. We volunteers aren't always so expert.

But when the heat and electricity went off at the shelter Sunday night, our UU volunteers rose to the occasion! Thanks, team!

Volunteers this week included:
Carolyn B, Grace D., Joyce R., Linda S and Monique W.

The shelter's gathering circle ritual is an essential part of
what makes this UU community service a spiritual practice.

For the inside dope on this spiritual practice, be sure
to attend the 10:30 service on Jan. 29.

Contact: Joan Nelson 453-6221 or figleafjoan@comcast.net

Book Club
book pile Our UUCM Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month, 7:30 to 9 PM in the Clara Barton Room.  All are invited. Our next meeting is February 15.  Carol Littrell will lead a discussion of Nemesis by Chalmers Johnson.   Johnson, a political scientist, is author of Blowback and The Sorrows of Empire.  "In Nemesis, the bestselling and final volume in what has become known as the Blowback Trilogy, he shows how imperial overstretch is undermining the republic itself, both economically and politically."  His advice is to follow Britain's role and jettison both empire and the world-policeman role.
Job Opening
There is a job opening in hospitality. We need a person to purchase supplies and bring them to the church about every two months. You will be given a list of the items that are needed. This would include paper products and coffee and tea supplies. Please contact Joanne Derby amjderby@aol.com, if you would be interested in volunteering at UUCM in this way.
