Nov. 2011

I write this from my hotel room in Budapest, Hungry.  Tomorrow Lisa and I hope to worship with another 1,000 Unitarians in the largest Unitarian church in the city, the First Hungarian Unitarian Church of Budapest, or perhaps attend the Bela Bartok Unitarian Church, another large church in Budapest.  What options we have in this land where Unitarianism is still a significant religion.

The weather during the last couple of days has been cool and overcast for the most part, lending a post-soviet feel to the old city and the Danube River that runs through it.  Budapest is a very beautiful city.  It has such rich architecture and both art deco and art nouveau influences overlain with the eastern flavors left from when the Turkish ruled these lands.  Romania and Hungary both have deep historical ties to the Roman Empire, new and old as well.

The majority of our time here has been spent in the villages of Romania and Transylvania, quite different experience than this old city. We have a whole lot of pictures of the Inauguration of the first Unitarian Church in Szovata, Romania and of our time visiting the surrounding villages and Unitarian sights in Transylvania with Levente and his family.

We will be hosting a showing and a conversation at the church to which everyone who wishes can come and see and ask questions and gain a greater understanding of the roots of our religious tradition and how it has played out into our modern times.  Hope to see you all there.

 Our Basket Share Ideas Needed!
  | | |
Put on your thinking caps: It's time to nominate great local nonprofits for this year's Basket Share program!
Ideally, a nominee should be a Bay Area organization that a congregant is truly involved with (e.g. as a volunteer) or receives services from.   By sharing our offering basket with a different local nonprofit for 8 Sundays per year, we live our UU principles while gaining valuable nonprofit partners that have similar goals.   We need your nominations. Please send your suggestions

 | Volunteers Needed for Closet Clean out! | | As part of the generous bequest left for UUCM by Rebecca Watkins, the Board of Trustees has authorized the purchase of replacement tables and chairs. These chairs will replace the orange plastic chairs, which are slowly but surely being sold. We will also be getting rolling carts that will contain both tables and chairs. The chair cart will be located in the middle Dream Room closet (with generous blessing from our YRUU). This closet is clean and ready to go. However, the table carts will need to be located in the back Fellowship Hall closet, and possibly one or two additional closets in the building. We are looking for a few volunteers to work together to help clean these areas out and prepare for the arrival of the new tables, chairs and carts. The estimated date of arrival is the 2nd week of November, so we would need to schedule this before then. Possible dates are Tuesday Nov. 1 or 8, in the morning. Please let me know at office@uumarin.org if you are able to help out!
  Thanks, Janette Morrow Administrator  |

 | Next MUUGS Retreat | | |
Registration is now open for the next MUUGs retreat, which will be held at the UU Congregation of Marin on Friday, November 4 to Sunday, November 6, 2011. This district conference is designed specifically for Middleschoolers, grades 6-9.
We welcome and encourage D(L)RE's to attend MUUGs' retreats to observe first-hand the amazing impact these retreats have on middleschool youth. The youth themselves report that they are more excited about attending their home congregations on Sundays and renergized about being young Unitarian Universalists by participating in MUUGS' retreats.
The registration details are available on the Pacific Central District website on the PCD home page at http://www.pcd-uua.org/. Please let your middleschoolers know about the retreat. If you have questions, you may email me at marlenea@sonic.net or Jason George, our amazing District Coming of Age Coordinator, at george.jasonr@gmail.com, who also goes to every MUUGS' retreat.
