Greeting to Szovata Unitarians, Oct. 8th, 2011 - Rev. Chip's Words
  | | | From Rev. Chip Wright and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin, San Rafael, California

It is such a wonderful thing to be able to be with our partner congregation here in Szovata on this truly momentous occasion.  I want to thank Rev. Levente for extending such a warm and inviting invitation to this event to both me and my wife, The Rev. Lisa Wiggins,  as well as to all of my church members who might have been able to make the trip.  Traveling a third of the way around the planet is a major endeavor and I am grateful to my home congregation, your partner church in California, The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin for making it possible.  Although more of my congregation couldn't be here today, they wanted me to bring both their warm greetings, joy and prayers to you on this inauguration day for your new sanctuary.  It is wonderful to be a part of such an historical moment in your congregation's life!  Lisa and I both feel truly honored and blessed to be able to be here at this time when the history of this land and the binding roots of our faith for all of us comes alive in your continued labors to create a new house of worship.  In such a temple as this the tradition that we have held high for these hundreds of years can be engaged and well-tended for those that come long after us.

A wonderful house of worship like this does not appear out of thin air.   It comes out of abundant hearts and deep faith.  It is crafted not only by talented hands but by care and love. These roof beams are carried on a dream and a deep hope. They are a sign that we Unitarians are alive and well.  In such a temple as this the tradition we have held high for these hundreds of years can be engaged and well-tended.  And for this we can all be proud.

We celebrate you here in this homeland, where there has been so much conflict and division for so many years over both the religious and political. We celebrate and respect that you continue to come forward to raise the head of our honorable religion. You are a resilient and long standing totem to our religious tradition. Thank you for your tenacity, your ability to hold to the faith and your willingness to risk in the ways you have to keep our Unitarian roots strong! If there is anything that symbolizes this, clearly it is this new place of worship raised here on this land at this time.

As a symbol of the special connectedness of your congregation with ours, I want to give you this book of photographs from my congregation, prepared by our partner church committee as a gift on this day.  We offer it as a token of our shared joy in your accomplishments and in your dream for the future.  May our two congregations continue to to offer to the world a dynamic and loving voice of a religious tradition which has always been built on hope, love, peace and a commitment.  And we pray that our friendship between our two congregations will survive long into the years ahead.

Please Respect the YRUU Dream Room!
  | | |
Special request from Linda Haumann, DRE

The YRUU have been busy this year cleaning up their "Dream Room".

On behalf of the YRUU youth group, I'd like to bring to your awareness the need for a little more respect of the "Dream Room". Many of you may not know that this room, while not "owned" by the youth, is truly a haven for our youth to meet and the board has designated it as the YRUU room. It's their home while they're at UUCM.

It is not a storage room and especially not a room to store broken chairs or tables. If you need space, please contact Janette Morrow, our administrator at  office@uumarin.org to arrange for storage. Please pay attention to signage on the doors to the dream room.

Thanks for your understanding!

 Our Basket Share Ideas Needed!
  | | |
Put on your thinking caps: It's time to nominate great local nonprofits for this year's Basket Share program!
Ideally, a nominee should be a Bay Area organization that a congregant is truly involved with (e.g. as a volunteer) or receives services from.   By sharing our offering basket with a different local nonprofit for 8 Sundays per year, we live our UU principles while gaining valuable nonprofit partners that have similar goals.   We need your nominations. Please send your suggestions

 | Call for Wesley Grant Proposals  | | |
  Dear Members,
Thanks to a generous donor many years ago, the congregation has money that can be used for a one-time benefit for UUCM. The Wesley Fund amount for this year is about $6,000 and the board will consider all proposals at its Oct. 26 meeting.
Your proposal must be for an innovative project; the Wesley Fund cannot be used for operating expenses. Requests may be for any amount up to $2000.
Your proposal should include: 1. A paragraph describing your idea 2. A budget of general costs 3. A line about who would benefit
Please send your completed proposal by October 15 to Julie Van Winkle, Board secretary. Either leave it in her box in the community room, or send by email: julievw@comcast.net.
 Thank you,
 Mikey Songster UUCM Board President

Readers' Theatre is now an established UUCM institution (this being our second year). We invite you to join us every second and fourth Thursday of the month in Fellowship Hall, from 7:30 to 9 pm. Our main goal is to have fun! Secondarily, we present short plays, poems, and other tasty bits at occasional Sunday services. Upcoming sessions are Thursdays, Oct. 13 and Oct. 27. Some of us will present pieces on Oct. 30! Please email leader  Jan Seagrave to learn more about us. |

 | Next MUUGS Retreat | | |
Registration is now open for the next MUUGs retreat, which will be held at the UU Congregation of Marin on Friday, November 4 to Sunday, November 6, 2011. This district conference is designed specifically for Middleschoolers, grades 6-9.
We welcome and encourage D(L)RE's to attend MUUGs' retreats to observe first-hand the amazing impact these retreats have on middleschool youth. The youth themselves report that they are more excited about attending their home congregations on Sundays and renergized about being young Unitarian Universalists by participating in MUUGS' retreats.
The registration details are available on the Pacific Central District website on the PCD home page at http://www.pcd-uua.org/. Please let your middleschoolers know about the retreat. If you have questions, you may email me at marlenea@sonic.net or Jason George, our amazing District Coming of Age Coordinator, at george.jasonr@gmail.com, who also goes to every MUUGS' retreat.
