Sunday Worship Service
Services start at 10:30 am.
October 9, 10:30 am: The Integrity of the Soul Lindasusan Ulrich with Worship Associate Rodney Gothelf.
What happens when your life asks you to put everything on the line for the integrity of your soul? Do you listen to that voice "still and small" and take a chance on a relationship, leave a job, or speak up about injustice? Lindasusan Ulrich, a seminary student from Starr King School for the Ministry, will discuss how sometimes, the biggest risk is not taking one.

Most new sermons on the "web sermons index" are audio. Older sermons are text. If you want a text version of an audio sermon please contact the minister.

President's Message:
Good Things Are Happening
Mikey Songster
Board President
October, 2011
Here we are, speeding into the second month of the church year. Our minister is giving sermons, children are learning in RE, committees are off and running, and work parties are organizing. The work of the congregation is being done. But who is doing this work? We all are!
Good things are happening because good people are doing what needs to be done. Many hands create a successful in-gathering service and beginning-of-the-year potluck; serve the coffee hour refreshments we share; make wonderful music and bring beautiful flowers to brighten our services; and accomplish bigger projects like the parking lot and Fireside Room. As a community, we come together in these and a myriad of other ways to sustain our home on the hill.
One thing I cherish about UUCM is that when there is something to do, we do it ourselves. It could even be one of our principles: The free and responsible doing of what needs to be done.
Thank you for doing the important work of this congregation and for a great start to the new church year. Together let's ensure that our collective spiritual home remains a vibrant, welcoming sanctuary for many years to come. |
Education Connection | | Linda Haumann Director of Religious Education October, 2011 How exciting to see so many children and families at UUCM! Welcome to returning families and a very warm welcome to new and visiting families! If you haven't done so already, please fill out an RE registration form for your student(s) and give them to me or leave them in the RE box in the Xerox room. For returning families, PLEASE find your child(ren)'s registration form in the accordion folder on the RE table in the foyer and update it and initial it for this current year. I've made up new name tags for many children and we urge you to have your child wear a name tag so we can all get to know each other better. Please let me know if your child needs a new tag. Please return them to the file at the end of the class. Many classes take advantage of the nice weather so please have your children dress for outside explorations. Comfortable clothes and shoes are suggested along with hats or sunscreen. Please don't forget to send a small amount of money with your child for the "giving basket" which is passed around in class. We collect this money every week and at the end of the church school year, the students count the money and decide to which charitable organizations they like to donate. The last Sunday of October (10/30) is our opportunity to celebrate the "Day of the Dead" or "Dia de los Muertos" all together as a congregation. This will be an intergenerational service and we encourage EVERYONE to come in costume. This is a joyful service while we also remember those loved ones who are no longer with us in physical form. Please bring tokens, pictures or anything that might represent a deceased loved one to add to the altar that we co-create. Nursery care will still be available that day. Now we switch to the Adult Education program! This year please watch for some special course offerings including "Build Your Own Theology" and a series (in collaboration with Social Concerns) in response to the film, "Deep Green". There are two small group circles that meet regularly and we're always open to start another group. Small group is a way to get to know other members while deepening our own spiritual search in a more intimate setting. Please contact me if you're interested in starting another group! We're open to new ideas and would love your feedback regarding adult education classes you'd like to see offered. See you on the hill! With love and light, Linda Haumann, DRE dre@uumarin.org |
Call for Wesley Grant Proposals
Dear Members,
Thanks to a generous donor many years ago, the congregation has money that can be used for a one-time benefit for UUCM. The Wesley Fund amount for this year is about $6,000 and the board will consider all proposals at its Oct. 26 meeting.
Your proposal must be for an innovative project; the Wesley Fund cannot be used for operating expenses. Requests may be for any amount up to $2000.
Your proposal should include: 1. A paragraph describing your idea 2. A budget of general costs 3. A line about who would benefit
Please send your completed proposal by October 15 to Julie Van Winkle, Board secretary. Either leave it in her box in the community room, or send by email: julievw@comcast.net.
Thank you,
Mikey Songster UUCM Board President

Our book selection will be Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma to be discussed jointly with his new short book, Food Rules, An Eater's Manual. Norman will get the "Omnivore" book kit from the library and give copies out on Sunday at UUCM. The library has many copies of "Food Rules. READERS' THEATRE WANTS HAMS! | | No, not pork. We want anyone at UUCM who likes to read dramatically out loud with a group. Readers' Theatre is now an established UUCM institution (this being our second year). We invite you to join us every second and fourth Thursday of the month in Fellowship Hall, from 7:30 to 9 pm. Our main goal is to have fun! Secondarily, we present short plays, poems, and other tasty bits at occasional Sunday services. Upcoming sessions are Thursdays, Oct. 13 and Oct. 27. Some of us will present pieces on Oct. 30! Please email leader Jan Seagrave to learn more about us. |

The minutes are also available in the Members only UUCM Board of Trustees Documents.
- The budget that the Congregation approved in June can be found in the members only section of the web site.
- September and October Kirtan Meditation classes have been cancelled. They will resume in November.

Next MUUGS Retreat | |
Registration is now open for the next MUUGs retreat, which will be held at the UU Congregation of Marin on Friday, November 4 to Sunday, November 6, 2011. This district conference is designed specifically for Middleschoolers, grades 6-9.
We welcome and encourage D(L)RE's to attend MUUGs' retreats to observe first-hand the amazing impact these retreats have on middleschool youth. The youth themselves report that they are more excited about attending their home congregations on Sundays and renergized about being young Unitarian Universalists by participating in MUUGS' retreats.
The registration details are available on the Pacific Central District website on the PCD home page at http://www.pcd-uua.org/. Please let your middleschoolers know about the retreat. If you have questions, you may email me at marlenea@sonic.net or Jason George, our amazing District Coming of Age Coordinator, at george.jasonr@gmail.com, who also goes to every MUUGS' retreat.
Thanks, Marlene Abel MUUGS Registrar DRE, UU's of Petaluma
