Welcome Back My Friends

Mikey SongsterMikey Songster

Board President
September, 2011

Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends,

We're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside...

I'm guessing this is the first (and probably only) time Emerson, Lake and Palmer will be quoted in these pages.  Yet, from the moment I knew I would be taking a turn as President of our Board of Trustees, and even more so as we've gotten closer to the beginning of a new church year, I haven't been able to stop thinking about those two simple lines that describe so much of what I'm feeling.

This year promises to be a year of change and growth, both for me personally and for our community as a whole.  Since first coming up the hill in 1999, this community has guided and sustained me through good times and bad.  And although I have played many roles over the years, I am now taking on one I never thought I would, that of your Board President.  Yet, as has happened so many times over the past 12 plus years, this community is calling me to stretch beyond my normal comfort zone, to contribute in ways I never thought possible.  I am thrilled and excited to serve you in this new capacity and I welcome all of you who also feel called to serve this community, in your own way and in whatever role fits you.

Very soon, we will all come together to renew our fellowship for another year.  That yearly recommitment to our community and to each other sustains this congregation and together we can ensure that this show will never end.

So, welcome back my friends, I'm so glad you could attend!

Book Club September 21

book pile Our UUCM Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month, 7:30 to 9 PM, in the Clara Barton Room. New members are welcome to come and participate in our lively discussions!  Contact: Nani Ranken.

Our book for September 21 is  Run, a novel by Ann Patchett.   As in her best-selling Bel Canto, the author explores the ways in which six characters, whose families are connected in unexpected ways, respond to an accidental event.

In addition, we will present issues current to elders in Marin, such as transportation, driving, etc.  There will also be speakers on relevant topics.

We will be offering a light lunch following the service on
"Taking Care of One Another".  Those attending the class
will remain in the sanctuary.

We encourage you to bring your families.  Sometimes
they become key to our quality of life going forward.

UU Men's Retreat

The annual UU Men's Retreat for men in the Pacific Central District is being held the weekend of Oct 14-16 in its usual location at the Westminster Retreat Center in Alamo, CA.  This year, we have made the event more affordable: $175 if you register by Sept. 1 and $200 thereafter.  If you're under 30, it's only $150.  Now's the time to register!

As always, it will be a time for UU men to share our experiences with one another, to learn, to play and to form new bonds with our fellow men.  For many of us who come year after year, it's a time of both reflection and of reaching out.  I hope you'll be kind to yourself and attend this year's Men's Retreat.
