Minister's Column: Chip's Clips
| | Rev. Chip Wright Minister, UUCM September, 2011
Another year has come round and we will join together again on September 11th for our ingathering service, recognizing the official opening of our church year. Don't forget to bring water from your travels and special places, rocks or other symbols of your summers to help build our altar of renewal and fill our waters of anointment with which we welcome each other back into another full church year.
Some of us will be returning from a slower pace; some from distant travels. Others who have been active through the summer will be anticipating the full church year and the uplift in energy and activity that comes with it.
Personally I'm excited to be beginning my third year here as your minister and look forward to a full and productive year ahead. We have a dynamic and exciting future ahead of us as we grow and celebrate our liberal religious congregation here on the hill.
I look forward with anticipation as we forge new relationships; enter new efforts in the work of our church, celebrating the lives we share here, and in our work within the wider world. With great joy I look ahead to experiencing those spurts of growth that can't be missed in our young people after not seeing them for several months. It's amazing to see how just a few months can make such a difference in a young person. It may be harder to see the shifts in us older folks but small or larger differences happen with us as well. It is a reminder that community is an ever evolving abundant field filled with many possibilities, with the boundless potential of tomorrow. We who gather to make this congregation what it is are doing a job that is not just fun and joyful, deep and caring, but important and necessary. We ALL matter in this effort, each and every one of us! Don't be shy; it's good work we do here and good karma for tomorrow! Without you we are not whole, and the world would be less for such a loss! So I'll see you all on Sunday the 11th .

Education Connection
| | Linda Haumann Director of Religious Education September, 2011 As we anticipate a new year of Religious Education (RE), I'd like to welcome back all of our wonderful families! I hope your summer has been relaxing and rejuvenating. This year the focus in much of RE will be on our 7th UU principle; "respect for the interdependent web of life of which we are a part". Our Ingathering Intergenerational service is on Sept. 11th. Please remember to gather water and stones from your summer travels to bring to that service! Religious Education classes will officially start up again on September 18th. We are blessed to have fabulous volunteer teachers who are gathering materials and making plans for exciting classroom activities. Newest among our hired teachers is Andrea Hildreth, who we've welcomed as our new nursery care provider. Andrea has volunteered in the nursery for over a year and knows our youngest ones quite well. We're thrilled to have her join our caring staff. Please see the new RE brochure for details on class curricula. This can be found on the RE webpage and a hard copy can be found in the UUCM foyer on the RE table. Here are the teachers and grade splits for this church school year: Nursery: Andrea Hildreth PreK/Kindergarten (meet off the nursery): Carol Kerr and others Grades 1-3 (meet downstairs in the Wright room): Ann Gronvold and Nani Ranken Grades 4-6 (meet in the Fireside room): Tanya Webster and Susan Mathews Grades 7 & 8 study OWL (Our Whole Lives) Meet in Clara Barton room: Mike Songster, Doug Kerr and Lori Smith YRUU (meet in Dream Room): Dan Mansergh and helpers: We are looking for a female youth advisor for our YRUU group to assist Dan. Please let me know if you'd like to hear more about what this commitment entails. Working with our youth is always a rewarding experience! Last but not least, here are some reminders about RE registration: PLEASE find your child(ren)'s registration form in the accordion folder on the RE table in the foyer. Please update it and initial it for this current year. New forms will also be available on the table. These forms need to be completed by the end of September. I'm looking forward to another year of wonder, learning and spiritual growth! With love and light, Linda Haumann, DRE dre@uumarin.org |

Fireside Room Renovation Report
| | Hello all, Due to the permanent time change for regular services to 10:30, the Contemplative Service will be held in the Fireside Room starting in September. In anticipation of this, The Fireside Room Task Force has been meeting to decide how to make the space more beautiful for people who attend that service, as well as for the many people who rent the Fireside room for various purposes.
Working with an interior designer, we have identified the needs and requirements, and have created a design and task list to update the room. Pictures of the design elements can be seen on the proposed Fireside Room Design page.
While the changes may not be done in time for the first service, we hope to have the major parts of the renovation completed during September. Thank you to everyone who has helped, and especially Janette in the office and Mikey Songster, our new Board President, who have done the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

Our book for September 21 is Run, a novel by Ann Patchett. As in her best-selling Bel Canto, the author explores the ways in which six characters, whose families are connected in unexpected ways, respond to an accidental event.

UU Men's Retreat
| | The annual UU Men's Retreat for men in the Pacific Central District is being held the weekend of Oct 14-16 in its usual location at the Westminster Retreat Center in Alamo, CA. This year, we have made the event more affordable: $175 if you register by Sept. 1 and $200 thereafter. If you're under 30, it's only $150. Now's the time to register!
As always, it will be a time for UU men to share our experiences with one another, to learn, to play and to form new bonds with our fellow men. For many of us who come year after year, it's a time of both reflection and of reaching out. I hope you'll be kind to yourself and attend this year's Men's Retreat.
