Sunday Worship Service |
|
Services start at 10:30 am.
August 21, 10:30 am: "You Are This Universe"
Sharon Wylie with Worship Associate Rodney Gothelf
The spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature. We tend to think of these teachings as ancient, but they also intersect with and inform many of our modern ideas. Come, let us consider the many ways we connect with each other and with the Divine.
August 28, 10:30 am: "School Days: Teachers on the Spiritual Path"
Christy Baker, Starr King School for the Ministry with Worship Associate Bev Munyon
Whether we have long ago abandoned the rhythm of the school year or are preparing to enter new classes this week, we all have been influenced by a variety of teachers in our lives. Who are the spiritual teachers we rely upon? How are we learning from our lives and teaching one another? Bring a beginner's mind and open heart to what life is offering to teach you today.
Christy Baker is a recent graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry and a Candidate for UU Ministry. She spent several years working for the UU Legislative Ministry of CA as well as for three congregations in the UU Pacific Central District. She has passion for spiritual practices, teaching, writing, and pastoral care.

Thank you
| | The family of Donald Kaufmann wishes to let his UU family know how much we all appreciated the concern, visits, and cards from the UU family during his recent serious illness.
Seeing familiar, loving faces, and friends and the shower of cards meant so much to him and helped so much with his recovery. He told his sister when he was quite ill that he felt he was "surrounded by love". With gratitude and best wishes to you all. Nona Kaufmann |
Music Notes
| | Hi everyone and welcome to a new church year. I hope we all had somewhat of a rest this summer and are ready to chime in singing again. This is a shout out to all who might be wanting a personal invitation to join our adult and children's choirs. As for the children's choir we will start meeting October 9 (the Sunday after our revival Sunday October 2.)
My adult choir will commence rehearsals on August 23, Tuesday at 7:30pm. I have a big piece to rehearse for our revival as well as our services for September. I have some new music that I know we will enjoy. I look forward to seeing all of you then. Sincerely, Phil Hildreth C.M.L. Director of Music 415 606-5802

Fireside Room Renovation Report
| | Hello all, Due to the permanent time change for regular services to 10:30, the Contemplative Service will be held in the Fireside Room starting in September. In anticipation of this, The Fireside Room Task Force has been meeting to decide how to make the space more beautiful for people who attend that service, as well as for the many people who rent the Fireside room for various purposes. Working with an interior designer, we have identified the needs and requirements, and have created a design and task list to update the room. Pictures of the design elements can be seen on the proposed Fireside Room Design page. Of course, our dreams far exceed our current budget. There are several steps we're taking to try to raise the necessary funds. - We are looking into selling the orange plastic Eames chairs, which are considered by some to be a collector's item. If you have insight into who might want to buy them (or perhaps want to buy some yourself!) or ideas about how to market and sell them, please contact Katie John Blickensderfer (homes2sell-uucm@yahoo.com ).
- In addition, if anyone is an eBay expert and can assist in selling the chairs, please email Valerie Taylor (address below).
- We are working with the Endowment Fund to see if there might be additional funds through another Wesley grant or other endowment funds.
- If you would like to donate to the Fireside Room renovation, please email Valerie Taylor at
v-taylor@pacbell.net.
Finally, I would like to thank the people who have contributed their time and ideas to moving this project forward: Katie John Blickensderfer, Lee Fitzgerald, Randy Gothelf, Susan Ingersoll, Carol and Doug Kerr, Marianne Locke, Janette Morrow, Joan Nelson, Susan Pryor, Joyce Rhodes, Art Rosvold, Mike Songster, Diana and Peter Vine. (Sorry if I've left anyone out). Valerie Taylor |
UU Men's Retreat
| | The annual UU Men's Retreat for men in the Pacific Central District is being held the weekend of Oct 14-16 in its usual location at the Westminster Retreat Center in Alamo, CA. This year, we have made the event more affordable: $175 if you register by Sept. 1 and $200 thereafter. If you're under 30, it's only $150. Now's the time to register!
As always, it will be a time for UU men to share our experiences with one another, to learn, to play and to form new bonds with our fellow men. For many of us who come year after year, it's a time of both reflection and of reaching out. I hope you'll be kind to yourself and attend this year's Men's Retreat.
