Rev. Chip Wright

Minister, UUCM
May, 2011

April with its warmer temperatures and sunny skies came in as it should at the end of March -- like the lamb, and not a lion. The phrase "In like a lion and out like a lamb" has its origins with astrological constellations.  It refers to the stars that form Leo, the Lion, and Aries, the ram or lamb as constellations which during the month of March travel through the sky. Aries the ram moves to mid-sky while Leo, the lion, moves to the horizon and out of central view.  April, not coincidentally is also lambing season which is likely why the constellation of Aries was given that animal as its totem.

This became very clear to me in mid-April as Lisa and I with another colleague were leaving our Unitarian Universalist Ministers spring retreat in San Juan Bautista.  Right outside the gates of the St Francis Retreat Center gathered a large flock of goats which were dropping (birthing) their kids.  We stopped and watched as the young ones struggled to stand for the first time and the mothers worked to clean them up and help them into this new life.  And all the while the vigilant sheep dog watching us to be sure we were not a threat.

There is an uplifting that happens in my soul when I experience this kind of thing. New life beginning in all directions as it was in this flock of goats.  As I sat there our Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin came to mind and all of the energy and high spirits that have joined together here to make this liberal religious center of ours seem like a new life itself, being nurtured into being.  We are at a place of wonder and real potential to spring (pun intended) forward into the months and years to come, with joy, care and a real ability to help the forming of tomorrow.  What a wonderful thing!

So as May unfolds, with its growing vitality, and whatever
constellations or weather it brings into the sky, let's all rejoice in the new life we are given here to nurture forward.

May, 2011

What a busy springtime this has been! I hope that the Easter bunny's visit was fun for all of you and your children. It was heartwarming to see that several children were being dedicated into our UU religion. It was also lovely to know that we were able to honor so many children and youth in our thriving religious education program.

This month is the last month of formal RE classes, so please make a special effort to have your children attend! June 5th is the YRUU worship service during which time the YRUU will lead the entire 11am Sunday service and June 12th is our teacher/volunteer recognition service and end of the year potluck. Teachers...please attend so we can recognize you and shower you with our thanks!

Volunteers truly make our RE program so successful and our children, the next UU generation, are the beneficiaries.   Next church year there will be many ways for you to offer your special talents in both children and adult RE. Katie Mansergh's term as RE chair is up this year. She has graciously served as an outstanding chair who has been full of creative ideas and has shared her teaching knowledge with me and with the rest of the RE committee. If you have an interest in children's RE and would like to serve on the committee, please contact Katie at katie@mansergh.org or me at dre@uumarin.org.

RE also needs a few volunteer teachers/assistants especially for grades 1-3 and 4-6, so please contact me soon if you have a desire to teach or assist in next year's classes.

Nani Ranken, who has served so beautifully as the adult education chair, is also moving on. Adult education is a small but very important committee, since we provide a variety of adult classes and oversee programs such as Small Group Circles, Remarkable People, Reader's Theater, Book Club, Knitting/Crochet to serve and your next great idea! Please contact me if you'd like to join this committee. We need you!

Happy Spring!

Retreat Report

irisAbout 80 folks attended the UUCM retreat ranging from 4 to 80 years old. People sang at a campfire, square danced in the barn, painted beautiful silk scarves, talked about ethics, the prison system, and attended more workshops. They enjoyed the beautiful scenery and weather and getting to know one another better.

There is a selection of photos by Ray Meluch, Art Rosvold,
Suzi Musgrove, and Dan VanWinkle on our web site.

Other Retreat photographers- if your photos were not collected at the retreat send them to the webmaster for display on our photogallery or facebook page. Please downsize them (under 300 kb each).

BAFS Thank you Dinner May 20

friend chinese May 20th is the "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! BAFS Dinner" at Rev. Chip & Lisa's home.

The list of folks who brought friends has vanished so here is how it will work:  If you brought a friend any time this year to a UUCM service you are invited!  Don't be shy!

Because the weather promises to be great, Rev. Chip, the grill master par excellence, and Lisa are preparing for an exciting gourmet BBQ on their extended deck in their backyard. (address in your member directory) Bring a sun hat and your appetites around 5:00 PM and Rev. Chip will start serving hot off the grill about 6:00 PM.

Please RSVP to Janette at the UUCM office so we will be ready to feed everyone without testing our faith in a feeding miracle of biblical proportions!

Partner Church Committee News:

Going to Transylvania?

sovata bannnerThe Sovata church (our Partner Church) is going to have its Dedication Ceremony this coming fall on Oct 8.  They would very much like to have some of us there.  Our minister Rev. Chip is going to attend.  This is an opportunity for traveling in interesting areas you may not have visited before, to see sites connected with Unitarian history and also UNESCO World Heritage sites, and perhaps either Bucharest or Budapest.  With 5 to 10 people we could enlist the help of John Dale who heads up the UUPCC Travel Services to make us a special "Pilgrimage" that will give us all several days in our partner church's town.  Talk to Scott or Terry Merrick  ASAP if you are interested.  Rev. Chip is going to speak about this in his sermon on May 29 and Terry and Scott will have a meeting afterward for interested people.
