  Sunday Worship Service        |
  | |
Feb. 27, 11 am:  'The Transylvanian Unitarian Symbol and its Meaning for Us' Rev.  Levente Lázár with Worship Associate Rodney Gothelf

Our lives are surrounded by symbols.  In our homes, on the streets, even the letters we write are a kind of symbol.  Our everyday lives are led by symbols.   Why do we need and use symbols? What does the Transylvanian Unitarian Symbol of the dove, serpent, mountain and crown represent?  Peace, wisdom, levels, kingdom?  Yes, but also freedom, eternity, high knowledge, being ruler of your own life - depending on your point of view. This sermon will look at the meaning of Unitarianism in this world, through the lens of this Transylvanian symbol.  We will explore our pride in this symbol, and what it represents to those who see it.

The Rev. Levente Lázár is the 2010-2011 Balázs Scholar at Starr King School for the Ministry, and is minister to congregations in Szováta (UUCM's Partner church) and Csokfalva, Transylvania.  He has been very involved in strengthening smaller, partnered congregations, and with renovating and building new churches.  He is interested in the connection between science and religion, people's belief systems, their relationship with God or the Transcendent, and with fulfilling spiritual needs.  He hopes to return at the end of his scholarship year with new insights into church administration.

Education Connection
March, 2011
Spring is on the way! It's always a treat for me to see the Marin hills turn green as fleeting as that might be. Now that the winter holidays are over and we're past ski week, we can return to regular scheduling. RE (Religious Education) classes resume as our children delve a little deeper into their respective curricula, so regular attendance is important.
If you're thinking about joining our congregation, there will be a New Member Ceremony during the first part of the 11am worship service on Sunday, March 13th. Please contact Rev. Chip to let him know that you'd like to participate in this special welcoming.
There are several exciting intergenerational events scheduled over the next few months. The first is Friday March 4th Pizza/Game night (5:30-7:15 pm). We'll have another round of the "Stump the Chip" game where we try to stump Rev. Chip with questions we create for him. He may attempt to stump us back!
Another intergenerational event is the Spring Labyrinth Walk on Saturday March 12th from 7-9 pm. We are so lucky to have Cindy Pavlinac, renowned photographer and viola player with her partner, Martin Gregory, acclaimed composer and pianist, to lead this fundraising event. They bring a 32' cloth labyrinth and transform Fellowship Hall. Please tell all your friends to come too and children are welcome! Please refer to the flyer in the UUCM foyer and also in this newsletter for more details.   The last intergenerational event I'd like to highlight is the UUCM all church Retreat at Walker Creek Ranch April 29-May 1st. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for all the details. The retreat offers a wonderful opportunity for us to bond as a community in a relaxing setting surrounded by natural beauty. There are workshops for adults and children as well as Camp Fire songs and smores, a Barn Dance with live music, ropes course, hikes, tie-dying, crafts and lots of fun!   The small group circles have welcomed new members and we have room for more! Please contact me if you'd like to join at dre@uumarin.org   Rev. Chip will also offer two informative classes on Islam immediately after Sunday services from 12:30-3pm on March 27th and April 10th. Mark your calendars and plan to attend! See flyer and sign up for childcare no later than March 20th.

 | Pledge Canvassers Needed!  | Want to help UUCM and get to know a few of your fellow congregants better? Become a pledge canvasser!    We need canvassers for our March pledge drive, and hope that new and longstanding members alike will jump onboard.  We're continuing to simplify this year--canvassers will help encourage pledge-making during the Sunday coffee hour and make a few follow-up phone calls or visits. E-mail Susan Ingersoll at pledge@uumarin.org for more information and to sign-up.

 | Music Notes  |
 Phil Hildreth C.M.L
Director of Music, UUCM
February, 2011

Hello all! This is February and I have just returned from the lovely town of Las Cruces, New Mexico for my first official UUMN Board Meeting. The history of the town is rich for a fairly new town, and being close to the border of Mexico it has its share of border issues as well.

Our Moderator, Catherine Massey, (also a Credentialed Music Leader as I am) hosted the board in her UU Church of Las Cruces. We attended her Sunday service and it was, of course, very different from our own service.  They had a gal playing a steel drum. A steel drum is a drum made traditionally from oil barrels and pounded into a variety of notes. The most complex have all the notes of a 12 note scale. The drummer played songs that were familiar to us and we sang along. I do not think the congregation sings along with the drummer normally, but we could not resist. We all stood up and told everyone where we were from. Our board consists of people from Detroit, Madison, San Diego, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Boston.

Our Children's Choir sang "That's Amore" on February 13th and it was beautiful. We have a great treasure in our youth and we are reminded every day that they will carry their torch, (not ours), long after we leave this world.

Cindy Pavlinac, Sacred Places Photo Projection & Viola

Come Walk a Labyrinth at UUCM on
Saturday March 12th from 7-9pm!
Martin Gregory and Cindy Pavlinac will bring their multimedia labyrinth extravaganza to Fellowship Hall. They will install a 32' canvas labyrinth and surround it with candles, contemplative music and photos. Martin sets the mood with his keyboard compositions while Cindy adds viola and projects her photos of sacred places to illuminate 15' hanging veils. Cindy will present a brief introduction to labyrinths, then music and images will flow continuously during the evening. Come to walk the labyrinth, listen to music, watch images, and linger by the labyrinth. Join us for an inspiring evening experience of joyous reawakening and connection. Plenty of seating and refreshments available. Families welcome. Celebrate spring with this special fundraiser for UUCM.

 | Adult Education: UUCM Book Group   | |
Our UUCM Book Group meets the third Wednesday of each month, 7:30 to 9 PM, in the Clara Barton Boom.  New members are welcome to come and participate in our lively discussions!  Our book for the March 16 meeting is Wallace Stegner's Angle of Repose.   This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel covers four generations in the life of an American family in the West.  The  protagonist, an offspring of the family, is an aging historian whose discoveries are both historically and personally significant. | Landscape Work Party   | | Come clean the Fishpond Saturday, March 26th.
The Landscape Committee is having a work party March 26th to clean the pond and do odd jobs around the garden. The pond has to be emptied and cleaned once a year. The fish are caught and placed in a barrel before being returned to their renovated home. This is a huge job and lots of fun.

Learn Secret of Pond Pump from the Master:  Be the next in a venerated lineage.  We need  a UUCM member to come to the Work Party to learn the operation of the fish pond pumping system from Art Derby.  I believe this will be Art's last year to work on the system so we need a new expert for the future.    John Quinley, Chair Facilities Committee
A delicious lunch will be provided.
We start at 8:30 and usually finish at 2:00
  Come and bring the kids.

Wesley Grant Proposals due Feb. 25
Thanks to a generous donor many years ago, the congregation has money that can be used for a one-time benefit for UUCM. Please include
1.      a paragraph describing your idea
2.      a budget of general costs
3.      a line about who would benefit
Please send your completed proposal by Feb. 25 to Sally Schroeder, Board secretary. Either leave it in her box in the community room, or send by email: sallyrschroeder@comcast.net.
