Sunday Worship Service |
| Jan. 30, 11 am: "What A Difference A Change Makes" Rev. Paul Gaffney, Chaplain with the Marin Interfaith Street Chaplaincy with Worship Associate Joan Nelson
Rev. Paul recognizes the sacred spark in everyone. Particularly in those who are down on their luck, and thus overlooked and otherwise disrespected. At the soup kitchen, in jails, hospitals, and community service organizations, Rev. Paul is himself a spiritual presence, a movable sacred space. He will give us the deeper story that lies behind what we see in the news and on the streets.

Rev. Chip's Clips: Alliteration

 Rev. Chip Wright
February, 2011
In honor of the new year of 2011 I am now titling my monthly newsletter offering Rev. Chip's Clips, a more reflective title for thoughts on a busy congregation which lends itself to slices or clips of our life together in all its diversity and abundance.
The work of our congregation is moving on in all kind of positive ways. I'm so appreciative of the level of quality and participation of our congregation: The class on Issues of Aging this fall was by all accounts successful. It was well attended with 50+ folks at every meeting. A big 'Thank You' goes to the Pastoral Care Committee for organizing it and providing this critical service. We have had the Reader's Theater debut in our services this fall as well and this will continue when it fits the worship theme. Thank you, Readers Theater for adding another level of depth to our services. And as always our choir has filled our hall with lovely and inspiring sounds. Thank you for your continuing gift of music! And our AcoUUstic cafes are regular, wonderful events now, and a successful Fun-D raiser and outreach to the larger music loving community of Marin. Thank you Katie! As the New Year turns we continue to house homeless women on Sundays. Thanks to all of you who participate in this, and Joan for coordinating it.
There are just too many good and positive things going on to mention here, so thanks to all of you who have stepped up to help in the life of this community on the hill as well as representing us and our deep felt values elsewhere!
Looking forward: My next educational offering will be a class on Islam on March 27th and April 10th. It will be from 12:30 to 3:00 after church in the Fireside Room. If you have an interest in this fastest growing religious movement on the planet, please come and learn all about its traditions, its diversity and its theology of culture. A light lunch will be provided. (Donations to help in the food and materials costs will be happily accepted at the class.) Please let the RE Committee know if you plan on coming.
As we participate and take joy in this growing and enlivened community the energy created by that truly makes a difference. All kinds of fun things are on the horizon in 2011-12, from our Sock hop to benefit the Marin Interfaith Street Chaplaincy and folks who are down on their luck right now, to our crab feed, our upcoming UUCM auction and what I count on to be a very successful pledge drive, and our annual all church retreat. As we move into the days ahead keep in mind that it is 'we' who make this place work and keep it alive. And please consider the value that this congregation and this liberal religious movement brings to you and yours, and to the world when you decide on your generous pledge this year. Thank you for your deep consideration and financial generosity. We all need to step up our commitment and support to keep this place the vibrant and meaningful beacon of liberal religious community that it is. This county and our wider world desperately need a growing and expanding voice for the kind of values we hold dearly in our hearts and in our service to our neighbors!
Ah, so much to do, so many people to greet and come to know better. What an opportunity for all of us! Lets make this place "SHINE" in 2011-12. See ya'll at church.

Weekly Shelter Report
|
|
This week's shelter culinary thanks go to:
Peter Berridge, Carolyn Bopp, Grace Dearborn, Thomas Ervin, Marge Hollinger, Amy Likover, Judith Pomeroy, Ellen and Jay Thurmond.
Next week's (Jan. 30) volunteers are Linda Stoneall, Sean and Eileen Prendiville and Lee FitzGerald. Please...when you leave your food contribution in the kitchen ahead of time, use identifying labels. Shelter labels are on the refrigerator door. Need (literally) hands-on volunteers: Our sleep-over guests could use a lot of caring and morale building. Anyone interested in grooming including hair cuts? manicures? pedicures? How about massage? John Blickensderfer is no longer available on Sunday nights for his popular hand rubs, foot rubs, neck rubs, etc. Can someone else fill this void? Sleep over? Other churches have called it to our attention that our guests are more likely to have a peaceful night IF A MEMBER OF THE CONGREGATION IS SLEEPING WITH THEM. Anyone interested in this kind of spiritual practice? The program needs more volunteers to wash sleeping bags. (This involves a trip to a laundromat.)
All are invited to dine at our Sunday evening tables. Food preparers and servers should arrive by 5:30. There is no food offering required in order to dine with our guests at 6:00.
There are fewer homeless women than expected. This is good news for those who have found housing. But the number of homeless men is rising. The Chaplain has put out requests for sleeping bags and ponchos for them. These can be left in the community room at any time.

Please contact Valerie (v-taylor@pacbell.net, 415-827-0800 ) if you can help with this simple but rewarding contribution to Sunday's service.

It's the Year of the BAFS! | |
And you are invited! BAFS? Well, that is 'Bring a Friend Sundays.' Bring a friend(s) to service at LEAST once a month--or have them bring you! And you can anticipate a reward beyond heaven, on earth: Gourmet dinner at the home of Rev's Chip and Lisa!
Here's how it works.
Please note the BAFS Sundays: Second half: Feb. 13, Mar. 13, Apr. 10 & May 15
All BAFS will offer an opportunity for any new folks to meet with the Minister, the RE Director, our Board President and other leaders of UUCM informally after the service.
So start calling your friends and telling them what a great place the UUCM is and inviting these special people to our special Sundays on top of the hill. A fun time will be had by all!
