Jan. 9, 11 am: "A Call from the Unitary Universal 'InterBeing'" Joan Nelson with Worship Associate Jay Thurmond
Humanity is being called to move beyond the old ego-driven (self/other; you/me; good/bad) world view, with its illusion of duality and hierarchy. This calls for a deeper awareness of the Unitary, Universal InterBeing.

Jennifer Gennari
President of the Board
January, 2011
Welcome, 2011! Wait-before you get distracted and scroll by these words, read on. I just finished "The Lost Art of Reading: Why books matter in a distracted time" and I was struck with another reason that my Sundays on the hill are so important to me.
If your life is like mine, it goes something like this: wake up, get kids off to school, eat, read news, check email, get to work, check email, work, eat, check Facebook, scan news, work, check in with kids, work, check email, get home, listen to news, cook dinner, eat, check email, check Facebook, sleep.
All day long we are bombarded with information overload. It's impossible to keep up with everything coming at us-and yet we try. As author David Ulin writes, "We face endless anxiety about our ability to keep up, to maintain a place amid the onslaught, to make sense of all the data and what it means."
The solution? Ulin quotes Judith Shulevitz: "Cultivate unhurried activities and quiet places, sanctuaries in time and space for reflection and contemplation."
To me, this is the importance-no, the imperative-of attending UUCM: it is the one place I am required to slow down, to reflect and to gather meaning in our common humanity. See you there.

Director of Religious Education

Happy New Year to all! It's wonderful to see so many new and visiting families and keep bringing your friends too!
We applaud our children in RE who shared their love, hearts and song with the Country Villa residents down the hill during the holidays. The room was overflowing and we were delighted to hear the residents sing a long, clap and smile. Providing service to our neighbors is not only an important part of our RE program, but is also a major value of our UU principles. Our next visit is planned for Valentine's Sunday, February 13th. Thanks again to all the parents who helped with transportation!
Heartfelt appreciation goes to our YRUU who made 22 bag lunches for homeless people which were delivered by Joan Nelson. Thanks to all those who contributed toiletry items for homeless people, RE was able to make approximately 160 kits! They were delivered to St. Vincent's services on Sunday, Dec. 26th. This has become a UUCM tradition.
For adults, the small group circles have openings for new members. Please contact me if you'd like to join: [email protected].
Watch for more information about adult education course offerings, namely a new course from the Northwest Earth Institute called "A World of Health" in which we'll explore healthy living from a variety of perspectives including
personal health, food, environment and consumption.
Rev. Chip will also offer two informative classes on Islam immediately after Sunday services from 12:30-3pm on March 27th and April 10th. Mark your calendars and plan to attend!
Here's to good health, dear friends and loving kindness to share in 2011!
With love and light,
Linda Haumann, DRE

Obituary: Rebecca Wood ("Becky") Watkin
|
REBECCA WOOD ("BECKY") WATKIN April 4, 1913 to December 19, 2010
Becky was a long time member of UUCM who moved to LaJolla in 2003. Although she was not very active in UUCM she pledged up until her death. Many UUCM members remember her political activism especially her support of political candidates and the parties she threw for them in the beautiful home she designed in Kent Woodlands. She was an architect until she retired in 1990 and was a member of the Organization of Women Architects and Design Professionals. Along with others from MFU (UUCM) she helped found and lead the Ecumenical Association for Housing, which has provided hundreds of low-income housing units in Marin County. She was a member of the Marin County Planning Commission from 1954 to 1958. View her obit in the Marin IJ to learn more about her amazing life.

Weekly Shelter Report
|
|
Homeless Shelter Report:
When our homeless ladies came on Sunday night, they wouldn't eat dinner or unroll their bedding until they checked a hugely "pregnant" fish in the pond. They were worried about predatory males chasing her to eat the babies. A phone call to Joanne D.and an e-mail to the shelter staff set the ladies minds at ease about predatory males. (But not about what might be a tumor in her tummy, which will be handled by Mother Nature.)
Shelter thanks this week go to: Katherine DS J., Jan Q., Suzie M. and Carolyn B. Next week's (Jan. 9) food providers are: Bev M. (meat dish), Carolyn B. (vegetarian main dish), Valerie T. (fruit), Linda S. (beverage) Blair G. (dessert).
All are invited to dine at our Sunday evening tables. Food preparers and servers should arrive by 5:30. There is no food offering required in order to dine with our guests at 6:00. There are fewer homeless women than expected. This is good news for those who have found housing. But the number of homeless men is rising. The Chaplain has put out requests for sleeping bags and ponchos for them. These can be left in the community room at any time. NEXT SHELTER NIGHT: Jan 9th

Sign Up to Volunteer Online!
| |
UUCM has gone high tech. You can now sign up to volunteer for an event (and later other jobs) by filling out a form online. There will be a link to the form in the weekly article about the event or on our web site. Generally the form will ask for your name and email address and then you check the box of the appropriate chore. The data goes to the webmaster and the chair of the event and no one else.
We are hoping to increase volunteers with this method.
The links to the forms for the Cowpony and the Hopheads cafe, the Sock Hop and the Crab feed are in their weekly articles.

UUCM's Second Annual Sock Hop

All the family can join in the fun of dancing or listening to "That Old Time Rock 'n' Roll" music of the 50's and 60's! Professional ballroom dance teacher Michelle Parodi will teach us some basic steps. Last year we learned "The Stroll" from our own musical artist Karen Auroy and collected over 100 pairs of socks for the Street Chaplaincy. Let's make this year's Sock Hop even bigger and better! Provide a Touch of Beauty to UUCM
|
Most Sundays someone of the congregation has provided a "Touch of Beauty," generally a bouquet, to add to the service. You, too, might like to provide flowers some Sunday. I usually make up a calendar of 1-2 months ahead and call people who have indicated that they would like to participate. You can also dedicate your flowers for anniversary, birthday, or in memory. The flowers can be taken home after the service or left , as you wish.
If you would like to be called about participating in this enjoyable service, send me your name and email address: email Terry M.
Thank you, Terry M.

It's the Year of the BAFS!
| |
And you are invited! BAFS? Well, that is 'Bring a Friend Sundays.' Bring a friend(s) to service at LEAST once a month--or have them bring you! And you can anticipate a reward beyond heaven, on earth: Gourmet dinner at the home of Rev's Chip and Lisa!
Here's how it works.
Please note the BAFS Sundays: First half: Jan 16 Second half: Feb. 13, Mar. 13, Apr. 10 & May 15
All BAFS will offer an opportunity for any new folks to meet with the Minister, the RE Director, our Board President and other leaders of UUCM informally after the service.
So start calling your friends and telling them what a great place the UUCM is and inviting these special people to our special Sundays on top of the hill. A fun time will be had by all!
