 Minister's Musing

 Rev. Chip Wright
January 2011

Winter is advancing and the frost is in the air; the trees have dropped their coats and opened their arms to the rain and wind.  This is not what I would normally think of as the way to approach winter.  Yet they stand firm, full face to the cold, resting in the short days and low simmer of life.  Down below the leaf cover are the insects, shuffling to tuck snug, under the cast off summer sequins of the trees.  And yet, still below that, the grubs and worms slow to an almost imperceptible breath.

They are all taking time to be slow. Perhaps there is something to be learned from that? I look around and see this, and start to ponder the many ways that life finds its livingness. Surely none of us would cast off our clothes and go stand face to the wind, rain, frost and even snow for the winter. Yet trees do this, and in so doing display a most ascetic view.  Erect with arms outstretched to the billowing sky, their fingers entwined with the primordial energy.  How can such a prayer be cast in words or even rolled upon the rippling waves of air?  And yet winter after winter this ritual persists.  It is as awesome and sustaining as my questions that run deep.

  Signing Up to Volunteer Online
  | | | UUCM has gone high tech. You can now sign up to volunteer for an event (and later other jobs) by filling out a form online. There will be a link to the form in the weekly article about the event or on our web site. Generally the form will ask for your name and email address and then you check the box of the appropriate chore. The data goes to the webmaster and the chair of the event and no one else.
We are hoping to increase volunteers with this method.
The link to the form for the Cowpony and the Hopheads cafe is in this weekly and links to the forms for the Sock Hop and the Crab feed will be in next week.

After our 2 chamber music concerts it is time for something different. Cowpony and the Hopheads, is a three piece acoustic folk-rock trio. Kim Richards (vocals, guitar, bass, percussion), James Tepperman (mandolin, guitar, woodwinds, vocals) and Peter Tracy (guitar, dobro, mandolin, harmonica, vocals) make up the band. They're known for surprising audiences with their freewheeling mix of many genres. You never know what they'll do next. More info about the group.

Kudos to Touch of Beauty Participants from Terry M.,  facilitator

Most Sundays someone of the congregation has provided a "Touch of Beauty," generally a bouquet, to add to the service.  This year, 2010,  the following people have done one or more Sundays for us:  Joanne D.,  Anne B.,  Sally S.,  Terry M.,  Eleanor and John S., Katherine J., Judith P., Lori S., and Edna L.  I wish to give them all my heartfelt thanks.  You, too, might like to provide flowers some Sunday.  I usually make up a calendar of 1-2 months ahead and call people who have indicated that they would like to participate.  You can also dedicate your flowers for anniversary, birthday, or in memory.   The flowers can   be taken home after the service  or left , as you wish.  If you would like to be called about participating in this enjoyable service, send me your name and email address: email Terry M.

Thank you,  Terry M.

  Social Concerns Activists
  | | UUCM's Social Concerns Committee recognizes congregants' contributions to the community.
Doug Kerr and Christopher Gilkerson serve ina grassroots organization known as "No Wetlands Landfill Expansion," which hassuccessfully sued the County of Marin and Waste Management, Inc. (the owner ofthe Redwood Landfill) for violating the California Environmental Quality Act inproposing and approving a project to expand the dump adjacent to the PetalumaMarsh and River Estuary without adequate protections for the environment.  Although the County has said it will appeal the court's decision, this was animportant victory in a long battle to protect our wetlands and futuregenerations from possible environmental disaster from the leaky and potentiallytoxic landfill. NWLE is part of the Green Coalition, which UUCM and many of itsmembers have supported over the years. |

It's the Year of the BAFS!
  | |
And you are invited!  BAFS?  Well, that is 'Bring a Friend Sundays.'  Bring a friend(s) to service at LEAST once a month--or have them bring you!  And you can anticipate a reward beyond heaven, on earth: Gourmet dinner at the home of Rev's Chip and Lisa!

Here's how it works.
Please note the BAFS Sundays: First half: Jan 16 Second half: Feb. 13,  Mar. 13,  Apr. 10 &  May 15
All BAFS will offer an opportunity for any new folks to meet with the Minister, the RE Director, our Board President and other leaders of UUCM informally after the service.

So start calling your friends and telling them what a great place the UUCM is and inviting these special people to our special Sundays on top of the hill.  A fun time will be had by all!
