Sunday Worship Service
|

Nov. 14, 11 am
"The Blessings and Curses of Tacky the Penguin" Marcus Liefert, M.Div. student at Starr-King with Worship Associate Steve Webster
There is a time to be a heretic, and a time to follow tradition; a time to stand up as an individual, and a time to recognize the greater web; a time to lead, and a time to follow; a time to separate, and a time to reconnect. What gifts have we received from the American culture, and Unitarian Universalism, has placed on individualism? What traps has it led us to fall into? As human beings we are continually doing the dance of independence and interdependence. Marcus Liefert will explore this dance through the children's story Tacky the Penguin and emerging wisdom from the global social arts movement InterPlay.
Nov. 14 Basket Share Sunday: support people with special needs! Our November 14th Basket Share will support Environmental Traveling Companions. ETC hosts outdoor adventures that help "people with special needs overcome perceived limitations, attain greater personal freedom and confidence, and better understand themselves in relation to others and the environment." Come to our service prepared to support 2 great local nonprofits: UUCM and ETC!

A Turn at the Helm

Jennifer Gennari, Board President
I love meeting new people! Don't you? It was wonderful to see so many faces at the first Bring a Friend Sunday-and I know we can do this again each month.
Unitarian Universalists have long had a funny relationship with talking about church. As a humanist, I often struggled with the very word "church" and for years I told friends I'm going to UU instead.
But my attitude has changed. First, there's momentum nationally for what we believe in. Standing on the Side of Love is getting UUs noticed for the work we do for gay rights, for immigration, for anything that is just. It's the power of love over hate, and that is something I am proud to tell my friends.
Second, this church gives me music, hugs, fellowship and sistership, and has been a safe harbor for me and my daughters for more than 10 years. I can certainly share that! I especially want to tell my friends who are struggling with their teenagers, because our YRUUs are there for each other, and nothing is more important than caring for the next generation.
Now, instead of just telling them, I'm going to invite them up the hill. Join me!

Grace Dearborn
I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I used to be a teacher but now I am a national education trainer. I specialize in classroom behavior management, motivating reluctant learners, and adolescent literacy intervention. I have two boys, (three if you count my husband) Mason age 6 and Owen age 4, who are the center of my world. I love gardening and cooking but have little time for either and the best part of my day is usually riding my boys to school on their bikes. I also love reading, which I have lots of time for when I fly for work. Recommendations?
Paul Dearborn
I was born and raised in Maine. I met Gracie (my wife) at a dance event and later moved to California to marry her- best decision I ever made. I am currently a high school special education teacher at Terra Linda High in San Rafael. My sons, Mason and Owen, are the lights of my life and there is nothing I love more than being a Daddy, though I also enjoy chess and coffee. I roast my own coffee beans (imported fair trade and organic, of course) in the garage to produce the best coffee around. I'll be happy to make you a cup if you come to visit.

Come to the "UU World" Salon!
|
|
The UUCM "UU World" Salon is a quarterly brown-bag lunch discussion. It's an opportunity for UUCM members and guests (families welcome) to gather and lunch together while the adults discuss an announced topic culled from "UU World" material.
WHEN: November 14th 12:30-1:30 pm in the Fireside room. Mark your calendars for future Salons: Feb. 6 and April 3, 2011.

TOPIC: from the current "UU World": "Religions' common ground? Does interfaith work depend on finding a shared kernel in the different religions, or can we find common ground in other ways? Does Unitarian Universalism depend on the idea that all religions are fundamentally the same?"
SUGGESTED READING: "UU World", Fall 2010, p.57-60.
Reading is recommended, but not required, and copies will be at the Salon as well. Please feel free to bring other articles and books on this topic that you'd like to reference during the discussion.
Hope to see you there! Questions? Contact Tanya Webster or Linda Haumann. FLYER

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) Part 2 (of 3)
Major news: This week the UU Service Committee announced that internationally recognized human-rights activist and leader Rev. Dr. William F. Schulz has been named the new UUSC president and chief executive officer. Schulz, former executive director of Amnesty International USA and former president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, has served as interim president and CEO of the Service Committee. This is great news. You can read more about it at uusc.org.
Back in Marin, and speaking of leadership,we all owe a debt of thanks to John Quinley who has been our official UUSC Local Representative for over ten years and did an outstanding job. Our congregation received many awards for the high participation and financial support of the Service Committee during John's term of leadership. John has recently retired from the position as he prepares for his new life.
Marje Park succeeds him as the new Local Rep. Marje served as UUSC Regional and National Co-chair of volunteers for many years before taking on the Local Rep position.
The major fundraising effort of UUSC is the Guest at your Table program that our congregation has enthusiastically supported for many years. Little collection boxes are distributed the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Members are asked to have a "guest" at their table and to make a contribution to the box at each meal during the holidays. Boxes are returned in January. This program is especially well suited for families, but anyone can participate and is encouraged to do so. Our DRE, Linda Haumann, oversees this program each year, and we will hear more about it at the November 21 Sunday service.
More next time on how Guest at your Table funds help UUSC advance human rights around the world.

It's the Year of the BAFS!
| |
And you are invited! BAFS? Well, that is 'Bring a Friend Sundays.' Bring a friend(s) to service at LEAST once a month--or have them bring you! And you can anticipate a reward beyond heaven, on earth: Gourmet dinner at the home of Rev's Chip and Lisa!
Here's how it works.
Please note the BAFS Sundays: First half: Nov. 21 (Stone Soup), Dec 19 & Jan 16 Second half: Feb. 13, Mar. 13, Apr. 10 & May 15
All BAFS will offer an opportunity for any new folks to meet with the Minister, the RE Director, our Board President and other leaders of UUCM after the service.
So start calling your friends and telling them what a great place the UUCM is and inviting these special people to our special Sundays on top of the hill. A fun time will be had by all!
