"Fairy Tales and Great Myths?"

Daylight Savings Time ends: Fall Back
Rev. Chip Wright with Worship Associates Judith Pomeroy and Beverly Munyon

We draw what often seem like arbitrary lines between fairy tale, myth, parable and scripture.  Many of the most powerful stories which guide us in our human journey cross these lines. In some cases erase them.

November, 2010

Off we go into the fall!  The leaves on our backyard grapevines are starting to turn.  I suspect that by the time this note gets out to you all they will have gone to many colors, as the deadline for my newsletter copy is 15th of the previous month.

And so we just had our third annual North Bay Revival in Santa Rosa last weekend and if you did not manage to get there, know that you were thought of and in our hearts.  A great time was had by all.  Lots of music and laughter filled the sanctuary.  We had our own banner parade with Marin, Sonoma, Lake County and Petaluma participating.  Our Board President Jennifer Gennari, along with her fellow presidents from the other congregations lit our chalice.  A handful of brave souls stepped up and gave testimonials to their commitment to our UU values and almost every one of the 360 folks there witnessed (out loud!) at some point along the way.  And never a word of the gospel or scripture was uttered! It was truly a UU revival!

If you haven't seen the announcement or heard me make it from the pulpit, this year is a BAFS year: 'Bring a Friend Sundays' year.  One of my Sundays each month through May will be a BAFS.  The first one was on Oct. 24thSo if you didn't bring a friend then you should bring two on Nov. 21stWhy?  Well, first because this is a great place and a very special gift you can give to a friend! And second, not to be forgotten: there are Prizes!  A gourmet meal at my and Lisa's home will be served for the people who bring the most visitors for the first half of the year; and then again for the second half of the year!  And if everyone brings a friend every Sunday (wouldn't that be something!) even on the ones not designated as BAFS (Just let me know and I will mark them up!)--well, Lisa and I will just have to cook all day and host all evening! See the NL article on BAFS in the NL, running through May to get all the details.

End of Life Class Nov. 7th Reminder

UU Service Committee Introduction

It has been a while since we have talked about the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) in our weekly newsletter.  There will be several events connected to UUSC in the coming months:

Guest at your Table, Holiday Cards, renewal of UUCM-UUSC memberships and a change in your official UUCM Local Representative.

Most of you are familiar with UUSC, but for those of you who are new or who need a reminder, let's begin with an introduction.  The UU Service Committee is an independent organization that works for justice in the U.S. and around the world in the name of Unitarian Universalism. The organization began in the early years of WW II when a young Service Committee helped people escape Nazi Germany.

Nowadays, the Service Committee works in the area of civil, economic and environmental rights, and help in times of disaster (in conjunction with the UUA). Due to the large number of emergencies in the last ten years, from 9/11 to the floods in Pakistan, this work has been of necessity a major focus. In all it does, UUSC works with "partners", organizations that are already "on the ground", and offers funds, technical services and other resources, and as I like to think, hope. Often they try to help those most overlooked by the larger service agencies, e.g., working with 9th Ward neighborhood groups in New Orleans, Untouchables in India and migrant workers in the U.S.

More next time on upcoming programs.
It's the Year of the BAFS!
friend chineseAnd you are invited!  BAFS?  Well, that is 'Bring a Friend Sundays.'  Bring a friend(s) to service at LEAST once a month--or have them bring you!  And you can anticipate a reward beyond heaven, on earth: Gourmet dinner at the home of Rev's Chip and Lisa!

Here's how it works.

Please note the BAFS Sundays:
First half: Nov. 21 (Stone Soup),  Dec 19 &  Jan 16
Second half: Feb. 13,  Mar. 13,  Apr. 10 &  May 15

All BAFS will offer an opportunity for any new folks to meet with the Minister, the RE Director, our Board President and other leaders of UUCM after the service.

So start calling your friends and telling them what a great place the UUCM is and inviting these special people to our special Sundays on top of the hill.  A fun time will be had by all!
Don't forget to make sure that you read this and every issue of UUCM Weekly News!  I work very hard to bring it to your mailbox every Thursday.
