|
| October 3rd, 11am "Servant or Sucker: A Faithful Response to Panhandlers" Rev. Megan Rohrer, Executive Director-Welcome Ministry, San Francisco with Worship Associate Judith Pomeroy
Should we give it all away or be practical, good stewards who save? What is the appropriate faith response to panhandling? Pastor Megan will addresses these questions and share insights from her eight years working with the chronically homeless and from her street retreats, where she lives on the streets in San Francisco's Tenderloin. Education Connection
| | Linda Haumann, DRE October, 2010 Our new church year in Religious Education (RE) is off to a great start and I heartily welcome all returning, visiting and new families! It's not too late to register your child so please fill out the form on the RE table in the foyer and return to the RE box in the community workroom if you haven't done so already. We encourage children to attend RE classes on a regular basis so that they'll be able to make lasting bonds with classmates and receive the most from the curricula and our fabulous RE teachers.
Please contact me if you have any interest in assisting in our classes (dre@uumarin.org), since we can always benefit from extra hearts and hands.
For those families who might be newer to UUCM, please make sure I have your email address so that you can receive a monthly RE parent letter. I also post the letter on the RE webpage and there's a direct link to the parent letter in our e-weekly. In order to receive the e-weekly, simply go to: http://www.uumarin.org and click on the "Visitor signup for weekly newsletter" button. In this way you'll be able to stay up to date with all the programs and events at UUCM.
There are two special Sundays coming up in October. The first is the 10/10/10 "Northbay Revival" in Santa Rosa. Our entire congregation, minister, choir, and RE will be joining other Northbay Congregations at the Santa Rosa church that day. There will ONLY be nursery care here at UUCM. Please plan to carpool with friends to Santa Rosa! We'll have a fun RE program during the service for elementary-aged children. Middle and high school youth will stay in the rousing service!
The other exciting day in October will be the Intergenerational service on Sunday, October 31st during which time we'll be having a HUGE celebration of "Dia de los Muertos" or "Day of the Dead". Come in costume and be ready to have fun!
On the Adult Education scene, small group ministry groups are now called small group circles and they continue this year and both groups have spaces for anyone interested. One group meets on the second Monday of the month from 7-9pm in homes and the second group meets at UUCM on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 1:15-2:45. Please contact me if you'd like to join. Nani Ranken and I will also co-facilitate a new class called "ETHICS" which is the third in the "Build Your Own Theology" series. Discussion and clarification of personal ethics will be the focus. Join us on Tuesday evenings from 7-9: Oct. 19-Nov. 16th (see flyer on RE table in UUCM foyer) or on our website at: (put link). Please sign up no later than October 10th with: dre@uumarin.org!

It's the Year of the BAFS!
| |
And you are invited! BAFS? Well, that is 'Bring a Friend Sundays.' Bring a friend(s) to service at LEAST once a month--or have them bring you! And you can anticipate a reward beyond heaven, on earth!
Here's how it works: One of Rev. Chip's preaching Sundays each month will be designated as a BAFS. The person/s or family who brings the most new people to visit for the first half of the year (now through Jan. 16th) and then the same for the last half of the church year (mid Jan. through May), will receive a gourmet dinner in the home of Rev. Chip and Lisa. And if you manage to get a friend to non-BAFS service just let Rev. Chip know you have a friend with you and we will chalk it up on our tally. And for heaven on earth's sake: you can bring a new friend every Sunday and secure your seat at the table! Ties will not be broken because Rev. Chip and Lisa have a large table or two if needed. The more, the merrier at the Wright/Wiggins household!
Please note the BAFS Sundays: First half: Oct. 24, Nov. 21, Dec 19 & Jan 16 Second half: Feb. 13, Mar. 13, Apr. 10 & May 15
All BAFS will offer an opportunity for any new folks to meet with the Minister, the RE Director, our Board President and other leaders of UUCM after the service.
So start calling your friends and telling them what a great place the UUCM is and inviting these special people to our special Sundays on top of the hill. A fun time will be had by all!

North Bay Revival
| | Oct. 10, 2010 10:30 am at the Santa Rosa Congregation Santa Rosa Congregation
A Sustainable World and a Dream of Justice
For the last several years the congregations of Santa Rosa, Sonoma, Marin, Petaluma, Napa and Lake County have joined together in Santa Rosa for a wonderful service featuring all the ministers and choirs.
CARPOOLING and CORNBREAD!
Keep it green!
If you are planning on attending our North Bay UU REVIVAL! please consider ridesharing or carpooling. Unless you directly make your own arrangements with others (such as the choir who needs to be there early for practice), please let Janette know or leave a message at the office (415) 479-4131 if you are willing to drive people, or if you need a ride. We will plan on having the cars come to the UUCM church parking lot around 9:30 AM. (PS - Novoto folks can arrange a different meeting location if desired.) Directions to Santa Rosa Congregation.
Keep it yellow!
And remember to plan to stay for lunch. Our UUCM is charged with bringing the cornbread so if you have a favorite cornbread recipe (or just a good one), make it up and bring it along. The Santa Rosa congregation will provide the chile and the Petaluma fellowship will bring the salad. FYI, we will be feeding some 350 or more fellow UUs!
The REVIVAL! will be highlighted by lots of music, choir anthems, tailored stories and flying congregational banners. A joint children's program will also be provided. You won't want to miss this great combined service and celebration of our UU values!!!

Sign up for eScrip - Donate to UUCM
|
|
It's time to sign up for or tune up your eScrip account! The eScrip program automatically generates contributions from participating merchants for every purchase you make at no cost to you. Last school year UUCM received $600 from eScrip. With a little effort, we can do much better. There are a few simple things that you can do to significantly power up our eScrip earnings:
- Not yet signed up with eScrip? Go to www.escrip.com to register or contact Monique Webster at webster-dejong@verizon.net for information and assistance.
- Make sure your Safeway, Macys, debit and credit cards are registered and up to date. This ensures that all your in-store purchases generate a much needed donation to UUCM.
- If you shop online, please also sign up on the eScrip website for AutoEARN. AutoEarn is a free software program that automatically generates contributions on your online purchases. By doing this you could significantly increase the amount of funding you are generating for UUCM. You pay exactly the same as you normally would when shopping online but also generate contributions through the eScrip Online Mall. This is especially helpful because you don't have to remember to go through the eScrip online mall site to generate contributions. AutoEARN is "always-on" when you start up your computer and helps you contribute incase you forget to shop via the http://shopping.escrip.com/ portal.

Social Concerns Luncheon
| |
Save the Date - Sunday October 17 12:30 PM after the service.
Opening Luncheon of
UUCM Social Concerns 2010-11 Programs
After a delicious lunch, there will be a brief introduction to our current UUCM Social Concerns programs, followed by a special showing of a video of the 2010 Ware Lecture. The Ware Lecture is the MAIN EVENT at General Assembly, our UUA annual conference. Each lecture features a well-known speaker on social or religious issues.
Some of you will remember the video of the 2008 lecture by Van Jones. Rev. Chip recommends this new one as one of the best he has ever seen.
Everyone is welcome -the lunch is for you. You do not have to be a member of the Social Concerns Committee. We ask a $5 donation, but no one is turned away!

Seeking Art Committee Chair
| |
SOS TO ART APPRECIATORS (and we know there are many in our congregation) If the congregation wants continuing art shows, someone has to organize the exhibits. Please step forward and lead us to a beautiful future. Seize this opportunity to turn the Fireside room into a special gallery. Anyone interested, contact Jennifer Gennari.
|
Social Concerns Table | | Do you have an issue?? During the post-service coffee hour on Sunday, our Social Concerns Committee sometimes provides an "information table" on various issues of interest to UUCM members. Any UUCM member who would like to present material at an information table can present a social justice "issue" to the Committee for approval to disseminate information on a particular date, preferably with a month of lead time. Just contact a member of the Social Concerns Steering Committee.
