A Turn at the Helm
|
| Jennifer Gennari Board President September, 2010 Welcome, one and all, to the beginning of our church year at UUCM! On
September 12, we will come bringing our stones and water, our burdens
and dreams. As we share and care for each other, let us also re-member ourselves. Rev. Chip and I are asking each of you to recommit yourself to membership here at UUCM. We
don't know what form your re-membering will take, but we hope that
membership means you can pitch in, and help to make this hilltop an
inviting place for newcomers. Perhaps you can organize refreshments, or
charm visitors with your outgoing personality. Let me know! Our
joy at gathering together again is tempered by news of this summer's
break-in. Burglars smashed the skylight in the administrator's office,
and stole all the computer equipment. Although we lost a lot of data,
our staff is safe and we are taking steps to install a security system
to prevent any more thefts. What's more, they didn't steal UUCM from me. Please join me in remembering why we have made a home in this community. Jen |
Rev. Levente Lazar and Family, Welcome
|
| The UUCM Partnership Committee and a few
friends welcomed the new Balazs Scholar, Rev. Levente Lazar, his wife
Rev. Erika Demeter and their two children
to the home of Terry and Scott Merrick last Saturday. Levente and
family had arrived from Szovata, Transylvania on August 19 and are
getting settled in their Berkeley apartment. The children are getting
ready for school and for Levente, the beginning of school at Starr KIng. After
a lunch provided by Lou Anne Needles, Marilyn Nelson and the Merricks,
the children had fun swimming in the pool and playing some games
provided by Lisa Cohen. The others had a wonderful time talking with the
Lazars and finding out about their new Unitarian church and some
of their members who had welcomed the Merricks when they visited in
2005. After the visit they were given a tour of our church and grounds. Rev. Levente Lazar, his wife

President's Message re UUCM Burglary
|
| As many of you know, over the summer, UUCM was burglarized. The first time the thieves were scared off; the second time, August 5, they smashed through the office skylight and took both computers, a printer, network hub, power cords, cables and our backup hard drive. The police came, dusted and filed a report.
UUCM lost much data, because we were in the process of considering off-site and Internet-based storage but had not yet made the move. The computer was protected with a password but it did contain credit card numbers of members and friends who pay their pledge in that way as well as social security numbers for 1099 tax-reporting purposes. Our office administrator contacted all those affected.
Fortunately, we have excellent insurance coverage, which covers the replacement of the property and data as well as repairs to the skylight and roof. It also reimburses for staff time spent recovering and re-creating data. We've hired a temp to help with this task.
The good news is that no one was injured. A crime like this, however, has made us realize the building needs to be more secure for the safety of our staff and members. We're working to put in an alarm system quickly. In the interim, if you are responsible for locking the building, please be smart and safe and check all doors and windows. During the day, if the office administrator is the only one on the hill, the front door will be locked.
Stealing property from us is a violation of our space. Let's be compassionate with each other during this time and also refuse to let the perpetrators steal the comfort we find here in this sacred home.

Thank you to Joanne Derby! and the Hospitality Committee |
| Thank you Joanne for many years of assuring we have coffee to drink on Sunday mornings before and after services. Joanne will release this responsibility on Sept. 12 when she will make sure, one last time, that we have coffee for our annual Re-Membering & Ingathering Service. Volunteers will be needed to help with set-up and clean-up. If you would like to help carry the coffee tradition forward, please call Joanne or Marge.
Take note coffee lovers: this tradition will only continue if there are coffee servers...and a coffee server scheduler.

UUCM Social Concerns Committee Links to UUSC Pakistan Relief
|
| The Pakistan flood has been referred to as "flat out Biblical." And, "Katrina on steroids." Americans, in general, are not responding as generously as we used to do. We Marin UUs, are American too. But we need not fit the national profile on this one. To make it easier for our members to send a contribution (of any size) the UUCM Social Concerns Committee provides the following link to The UU Service Committee:
donate through our UUSC. Thank you from your Social Concerns Committee

| Heads up all elders!
Rev. Chip will be leading a series of three classes

sessions will be held on Sundays after services beginning in October. If you have questions or suggestions regarding this series, please contact Carol Littrell at 883-9676 cjwlittrell@aol.com
