"Got Pain When You're in an Other Guy's Shoes?"
Joan Nelson, Pulpit Guest, with Worship Associate Carole Rosvold

Brain science suggests that the human animal isn't so aggressive and war-like after all. Indeed, that we are naturally empathic! But empathy hurts. What do you do when you feel someone else's pain? (Warning: This sermon promotes the practice of a forbidden pleasure.)

April, 2010

Hello everyone and welcome to Phil's musings. I used to call it Phil's Philosophers Corner but I grew up...sort of...

Today I want to talk once again about our hymnal, "Singing the Living Tradition". Throughout my Certification process I was always struck by the power and intensity of singing together in a group, or a congregation. And I was also struck by the lack of grounding in the UU world. It was then that I discovered the scripture that is our hymnals, past and present.

Whenever I stand before you, to announce a hymn, I make sure I treat the moment with a modicum of respect for the words and the music that we use in every service to enrich, commiserate, and just enjoy together from our beloved hymnal.

The UUA also has a supplement to our hymnal called, "Singing the Journey" that we have maybe 20 copies of. I sometimes have the choir sing from that hymnal. But these days I don't have enough of them for all of my choir to have one. That may be a good thing too, I guess. I hope one day we will all get the chance to sing from that as well.

Basket Share Program Seeks Coordinator

VOLUNTEER NEEDED!  Last week you read about our UUCM committees and volunteer opportunities. Here's one more item: the Basket Share program  needs a coordinator for the next church year. This is a wonderful job for someone who is interested in social outreach. The guidelines are all in place, and it's not a time consuming task. I will happily help you get started.
Please call me (435-3872) or email me.
Thanks, Sally Schroeder
