Some New Greeters Are Needed!! |
| From Rev. Chip Hi
all. It's time to give some old greeters a break and have some new
faces welcoming folks here at UUCM on Sundays. So we are in search for
some smiling faces to greet new guests in the foyer. Could it be you?! Greeting
is easy, arrive 40 minutes early, set up some coffee and cookies (normally
already made or in the making), welcome first time visitors and newer
folks with an offer of coffee and a cookie and your smile. (Arriving
early also has a bonus of getting the best parking!) A
face to face welcome is so important, as is letting folks know about
where the bathrooms and RE are located, helping them get name tags
and seats. This welcome means so much to a new visitor and it speaks
loads about who we are as a congregation. Although I would welcome all
those who have done it in the past and want to do it again, I would
particularly encourage newer members to try this because you know what
it means to walk into a strange place looking for a spiritual home, and
can share an important message that UUCM is also home for recent
arrivals. I
would truly appreciate it if you would consider helping in this. It is
key to our growth and in the excitement here at UUCM. So please become
a greeter. Talk to me if you can share in this greeting effort at UUCM
or contact Janette in the office or Sean Prendiville. Sean is the one who can help you learn the ropes so that you can feel comfortable in your new role as a UUCM greeter! Thanks so much - in advance - for your willingness to join in this effort. Rev. Chip

Minister's Musings
|
|
Rev. Chip Wright April,
2010
Minister's Musings:
How amazing are the cycles of life, the stages of living, the
seasons that continue to carry us round and round into the future. As I get older and see more and more of these
cycles my spirit always seems deepened by it. Yet, even as these seasons continue to roll
none of them are exactly alike. Some are
memorable and distinct from the others that preceded them. Like this winter of 2010 and early spring with
their 'lots of rain!' I heard just the
other day that the reservoirs in Marin are all full! - a very uncommon experience
of late. And so exciting to see. My partner, Lisa, and I were driving out to
the coast last Sunday afternoon to let the dogs run and we went by the Nicasio
Reservoir. The water was cascading over the
spillway and the lake was as high as it can get, and it was a sunny day!
After so much rain and weather I cannot help but feel the
abundant energy which the sun sings to me. This winter passing into spring is also symbolic
of our congregation's life here as well.
After such a long inclement season at UUCM there now is a spring unfolding
its own glorious bouquet, bringing forth a hopeful, colorful future with all its
budding possibility. It really will
prove to be a season to remember if we join in the spirit of this spring. So enjoy this abundance, this new life
spilling into our common pools. Let it nourish our fields with the promise of plenty. Flow into it together, knowing that our reserves;
our spirit, joy and possibility, like Marin's water are in the lakes and our
holds, it's our time now to plant our feet into the soil and grow together.

President's Reflections: A Turn at the Helm
|
|
Jennifer Gennari President, Board of Trustees April,
2010
It's
hard to believe, but our church year is drawing to a close. The youth
are planning their coming of age and bridging ceremonies, the pledge
drive is underway for the next fiscal year, and the auction committee
is planning a great party May 22.
My
colleagues and I on the board are looking ahead. In June, we'll be
saying goodbye to Art Rosvold, Ben Gale, and Marge Hollinger. I'm
grateful for their wisdom and historical knowledge. Who will take their
places on the board?
Many
of our elders are ready to turn over their committees to new leaders
too. Who will lead our vital committees? Churches must have a Committee
on Ministry, Leadership Development, and Personnel.
If you love the flowers that appear every Sunday or the worship associate's manner, maybe you should join Sunday Morning Operations. If you like welcoming newcomers or visiting those in need, consider joining Membership and Pastoral Care. Want to talk about what we teach our children? Join the Religious Education team. If numbers or words interest you, we can find a place for you. If you desire a voice in the wider community, talk to folks in Denominational Affairs or Social Concerns. And, if the beauty outside our windows inspires you, please join Building and Grounds.
Think it over. We've made it easy, too. Join Rev. Chip and me from 9 to noon Saturday, April 17 for a Congregational Development workshop.

Thomas Starr King and the Discourse of Anti-Racism Lecture
|
|
Unitarian Universalist Historical
Society presents Dr. Glenna Matthews "Thomas Starr King and the Discourse of
Anti-Racism"
Thurs., April 8 at 7:30 p.m. Richard
S. Dinner Board Room of the Graduate Theological Union's Flora Lamson
Hewlett Library, 2400 Ridge Road, Berkeley, CA 94709 A reception for Dr. Matthews will follow the lecture.
The Rev. Thomas Starr King? Famous Unitarian and Universalist of a
century and a half ago, more recently famous for being displaced from the
statuary in the U.S. Capitol by Ronald Reagan.
But he may be far more relevant to us today than those bare facts
suggest.
Dr. Matthews, who received her Ph.D. from Stanford, and has filled
faculty positions at Oklahoma State University, Stanford, Berkeley, and
UCLA, is a widely published author.
Thomas Starr King has been a recent
subject of her research, and she will be teaching a course on him at Starr
King School for the Ministry later this year.

Dream BIG (and often) Sat. May 22nd 7:00 - 9:30 pm

The Goods and Services auction is coming...
...A MESSAGE FROM YOUR AUCTION COMMITTEE In addition to raising funds for our congregation let's also attempt to meet the needs of the people. That is -- What do you wish would be on the donor list that you might bid for yourself, or maybe as a gift for someone else? What service do you wish could be accomplished by one of us as a donor service? Examples: I need a cat sitter for two weeks. I hope someone will offer windowwashing, a trip to the airport, caulking the bathtub. Others may desire vacation watering, weeding, pruning. Please email Joyce with your hopes and dreams. She will put the request through in future email weeklys. Print and View Donation form also available in the foyer. Print and View Flyers for friends and neighbors. |
Women's Winter Shelter Project Thanks
|
|
After 17 suppers
and overnights, we bid adieu to our lady visitors. Current shelters are packed
and overflowing. Many obstacles
remain before we see a new permanent
shelter. So, some folks will
sleep in
their cars. Some in tents. (Their main
challenge is to find sites where police don't chase
them.)
Shelter
administrators are forming people-to-people support teams for some of the homeless
folks. Also looking for placements in private homes for high-functioning people seeking live-in maintenance or
caregiver work. All suggestions are
welcome (Joan Nelson 453-6221).
Volunteers this
week were Ron Blair, Judith Pomeroy, Sita Wendroff, Brian Hunwick and Chloe...and our ever-faithful in-house masseur, John Blickensderfer.
What a gift he has been for these women who have slept on different floors
every night!

A Note of Thanks from the Partner Church Committee
|
|
After church on Palm Sunday some 30 UUCM-ers enjoyed a delicious pot-luck luncheon. We welcomed as our guests the Rev. Robert Balint and his family. Rev. Robert Balint is the 2009-2010 Balazs scholar. He is from Transylvania and is studying for a year at the Starr King School for the Ministry. Thanks to all who brought the really great food, put up and took down tables, set tables and cleaned up. If there are such entities as Kitchen Angels, you are they--from the tall golden haired one up to her elbows in soap-suds to the medium and shorter ones who kept everything going smoothlly. I can't mention all the names because I was in the Hall chatting with our guests. Katie Mansergh, Marge Hollinger and Joanne Derby come to mind; however, we appreciate all who helped and attended. Thank you!
Partner Church Committee: Terry Merrick and Marilyn Nelson co-chair, Scott Merrick, Lou Anne Needels.
