Plan to Come to Pledge Drive Dinner March 13
|
|
Dear Members and Friends,
Don't forget
to mark your calendars for Saturday
evening, March 13. That is when your
Stewardship committee will be hosting a complimentary dinner to which you are
all cordially invited. We will be celebrating
our 60th anniversary as a congregation and the 46th
anniversary of the breaking of ground for the construction of our building. On this joyous occasion, we will also be
launching the pledge drive for the 2010-2011 church year.
In
addition to a scrumptious meal, there
will be entertainment presented for your pleasure and child care will be
provided. Most
importantly you will have an opportunity to make your pledge of financial
support that is vital for maintaining the viability of our UU community. More
details will be forthcoming.

Choral Reading Group Forming
|
|
Want
to read poems and short prose pieces out loud with others? A UUCM choral
reading group is starting up. This is a performance-based activity, not really a
chanting or meditative exercise. In college classes they used to call it Oral
Interpretation, but we will "interpret" short literary works as
a group. Some pieces can be read in unison, others with cumulative
speakers, others in call-and-response form, for example. The goals are: 1)
fun; 2) appreciation of the bits we read. We hope to be able to perform at
Sunday services sporadically. Jan Seagrave, storyteller, readers' theatre
leader, children's librarian, and UUCM frequenter since 1989, will
facilitate the gatherings.
Please email Jan if you are interested in
knowing more by March
5.

Register Early for General Assembly
|
|
UUA General Assembly information There are several ways to reduce the cost of attending GA, and early planning is the key to most of them. It starts on March 1, one week away, when the Housing Office opens at 9 a.m. Eastern Time. Blocks of rooms have been reserved at five hotels, the rates vary widely.
A limited number of extra low cost rooms have been reserved at the University of Minnesota, for a fixed-price five-night stay - $260 for a single, $400 for a double.
Share a room with one or more other UUs - there's a UUA mailing list
you can subscribe to that functions as a roommate matching vehicle. The list
will also announce home hospitality offers. Subscribe by entering your email address and choosing a password for your subscription.
This year, we're also going to put PCD Currents to work in matching up roomies. If you've got a room to share or are looking for one, let Cilla Raughley know, and she'll post the opportunity in a future issues. |
Balazs Scholar Rev. Bálint to Speak at UUCM
|
|
Notes from the Partner Church Committee
Some of you may wonder what a Balazs Scholar is and what business is it of the Partner Church Committee anyway. This scholarship is for a Transylvanian minister to study for a year at the Starr King School for Ministry in Berkeley . Although the minister is not the one from our own Partner Church, it gives us an opportunity to communicate directly with Transylvanians. We hope that our Sovata minister, Levente Lazar will be a Balazs scholar sometime. The name "Balazs" is after Francis Balazs, a minister in the Transylvanian town of Meszko (also called the Alabaster Village) who sought to bring social and economic development to the area. His wife wrote a book about their difficult but inspiring years in Meszko some years after World War I. Marilyn Nelson will lend you the book it you wish --just ask her. An added interest to the visit of Robert Balint is that he is the present minister of Meszko. Keep Mar. 28 open for a pot-luck lunch and to meet and talk with Rev. Balint.
