"The Unitary Universal Pull to Evolve"
Lay Speaker Joan Nelson
with Sally Schroeder, Worship Associate

Responding to the pull to evolve isn't easy in today's hectic materialistic world. Yet, it's absolutely essential in today's deeply-disturbed world. This service will help us to recognize and respond to the Unitary/Universal impulse to live at a higher and deeper level.

Music Notes

Phil Hildreth C.M.L.phil hildreth

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk about HOW we experience music. I know there are a myriad of ways to listen to music as there are people on this earth. But that is not where I am heading in this article.

Sandy Geller played and sang a song entitled "I Remember" by Stephen Sondheim in one of our recent services. I know many people that would hush the people behind them when music is being performed. But I choose to see it another way. Music, for me, is not only the notes and measures and slurs and expression. Music performance is also the sound that is created by the audience (or congregation) during the performance. A kind of dialogue you might say. Either babies laughing or crying, feet shuffling or whispering or not so much whispering... all make up the dialogue of the performance.

This "Philosophy of Performance" automatically suggests that all performances are unique and "Living". Even the Gabrieli piece that my choir did on Christmas Eve was a living (changing) performance dialogue with my congregation. And don't get me wrong, if the listener is silent...that works too.

One more thought before you are discharged. I leave you till next month with this:  Libby Larsen is a famous composer and she once said, "if live performance is a fine Stilton cheese, then recorded music is Cheese whiz."

Social Concerns Luncheon Hosts Lindi Ramsden on Water Justice Principles

Water Justice: A Values Based Approach
February 21, 12:30 to 2 PM
Fireside Room

The speaker for our Third Sunday Social Concerns Luncheon this month is Lindi Ramsden, Executive Director of the UU Legislative Ministry of California and member of the CA Water Summit. She will present the Water Justice Principles and give us an overview of Water Justice issues as we confront climate change. With an $11 billion general obligation bond being proposed to address some of California's water issues, there is a lot to learn. A short DVD will be shown to illustrate the concrete reality of water shortage in the lives of people.

Y'all  come out and hear  Lindi Ramsden  upon the 21st.  She is a terrific speaker (and  a friend of mine).   Wish I could be there~

A Night to Celebrate!
Featuring Rev. Peter Morales, President of the UUA
Benefiting the UU Legislative Ministry of California
Friday, March 5th, 7 PM
The First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco

Rev. Peter Morales, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association, will be the main speaker and guest of honor.  The dinner will benefit the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of California.  This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet and share dialogue with the leader of our denomination while benefiting the legislative ministry's work to help us live out our UU values in the public arena.  This celebratory event will also offer an opportunity to meet and mingle with other Bay Area UUs and UULMCA supporters while sharing a delicious meal and being entertained by a live band.

Tickets are available for $40 by credit card through the UULMCA website at uulmca.org or by calling 916-441-0018.  Be sure to get your tickets early since this is Rev. Morales's only speaking engagement in the Bay Area and is expected to sell out.   If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call Sharon Stone of the UULMCA at 916-441-0018

Don't forget  to mark your calendars for Saturday evening, March 13.  That is when your Stewardship committee will be hosting a complimentary dinner to which you are all cordially invited.  We will be celebrating our 60th anniversary as a congregation and the 46th anniversary of the breaking of ground for the construction of our building.  On this joyous occasion, we will also be launching the pledge drive for the 2010-2011 church year.

In addition to a scrumptious meal,  there will be entertainment presented for your pleasure and child care will be provided.   Most importantly you will have an opportunity to make your pledge of financial support that is vital for maintaining the viability of our UU community.    More details will be forthcoming.

Fourth Annual UUCM Crab Dinner Made Success by Many

crab feedA grand time was had by all attending the fourth annual UUCM crab dinner.  I would like to thank Chip for purchasing the crab at Bodega Bay, cooking, cleaning, and cracking 57 pounds of wonderful sweet Dungeness.  Every piece eaten had been touched by Chip or his helper, Bill Pryor.  Carolyn Planakis gets a round of applause for stirring the chowder for 1½ hours while standing on a step stool and then pouring it into cups.  My husband was a fantastic help loading, unloading the truck, helping with the chowder, and general all around 'honey do'.  Don Beck was the Angel who came early to set up the bar and stayed late to lock the gate.  Lori and Phil went out of their way and made two types of tasty vegan sauce and pasta for the vegetarians and donated the cost to UUCM.  Susan Matthews, Chris Gilkerson, and family were table setters extra-ordinaries'.  Thank you to my kitchen crew - Jan Quinley, Bev Munyon, Joan Nelson, Joanne Derby, Terry and Scott Merrick, Marge and Dick Park., Marge Hollinger, Bill Gale, and whoever else passed through that I put to work.  Lisa Wiggins and Carl Ligenfelter aced the important job of collecting money.  Ray White compiled a CD of dinner music from across the decades that we'll use again next year.  A volunteer job I forgot to assign was washing linens, but Marge Park and Christiana Gale stepped in at the end of the night and took them home.  The flower centerpieces were to go home with the person who had a balloon tied to their chair.  All the bills aren't in, but we had fantastic food, enjoyable company, and an entertaining dinner that added approximately $1,000 to the coffers of UUCM's.

Thanks again,
Sher Sheldon

And, last but certainly not least, Thank You Sher!!!

UUCM trip to Transylvanian Inauguration in September
We recently received a letter from Levente Lazar, the minister of our Partner Church in Szovata, Romania (Transylvania) Finally, they are to have the Inauguration for their new church  on the last Sunday in September which is their Thanksgiving Day.  And they invite us, hopefully several of us, to  be present at this ceremony. This would be an exciting adventure if we could get a group to go! It would be a different kind of vacation trip and include World Heritage sites, historical buildings of importance to Unitarianism and  lovely landscapes too.  Think about it....
