A Turn at the Helm
|
|
Jennifer Gennari UUCM Board President
February is full of fun-we've got the Sock Hop, the Crab
Feed, and another AcoUUstic Café (more of a hootenanny!). I hope you'll join us
and think of these events as much more than fundraisers. Every gathering of
dance, song, and food is a way of building love.
Have you seen how UUs across the nation are Standing on the Side of Love this Valentine's Day? The movement's goal is to harness love's power to
stop oppression, and they're reimagining the traditional sweetheart holiday.
Let's think about the ways we stand for love at UUCM.
· We're sheltering homeless women this winter.
· We're donating socks and dancing for joy!
· We're hosting musicians and listening with new
friends.
· We're gathering and feasting together, with open
hearts.
Let's share that love and welcome everyone who comes to our
door.

Minister's Musings
|

Reverend Chip Wright February 2010
Well it's 2010 and UUCM is heading into its sixtieth year as
a liberal religious community in Marin. That is a true milestone to have weathered
these many years on our journey which has landed us on top of this hill
overlooking the North Bay
area!
I can remember when this community met in a little shed just
off the road in Larkspur just across and down the road from the theater and up
from the creek. It was there where we and the boy scouts met and I first heard
Mr. Rose play Christmas carols on wine bottles. Recycling before most of us
know the concept, he would collect them from different dumpsters and garbage
cans and then fill them to various heights to make pitch. He would strike the bottles with sticks with
rubber bands all wrapped around the ends. He would set the bottles on a table
right outside the front doors and play his Christmas songs as folks walked into
the service. Great memories!
And then we moved to the women's club right across from what
is the Marin JC now. I remember carrying in the wooden chalice there, the first
one this congregation had which Spence Prang had made. And I remember RE at the old three R school
across the freeway from the Civic
Center, just a few blocks
up from where the Italian restaurant and the dive shop are now. It was there I first saw a map of the Far East and all the places I would eventually travel and
live. These are more good memories.
I would charge us all to hold to the good memories I know we
all have of this place as we celebrate our rich UUCM history and what we have
become. And may our next 60 years be
filled with as much excitement as we step into a future pregnant with
possibility and the impending joy of dynamic and energized liberal religion
still standing proud in the North Bay!
Rev. Chip
