UUSC-UUA Joint Relief Effort for Haitians

In the wake of devastation wrought by the earthquake which struck the island of Haiti on January 12, 2010, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) and the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) are launching a joint relief effort to bring aid to the impoverished island nation.

The Haitian Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) estimates 2.2 million people are immediately affected in this nation of 9 million people.haiti earthquake

Classic 50s and 60s Rock and Roll (recorded) and snacks provided.  Wear your white bucks or your poodle skirt if you want.  Do the Lindy Hop, Stroll, Twist and Cha-cha  - think American Bandstand - or just listen.

Call for Walker Creek Ranch Retreat Chair

waterfallwalkercreekThe annual UUCM retreat at Walker Creek Ranch is scheduled for April 23 - 25.  Two magical days together in a beautiful setting with hills, wildflowers, wildlife, play and workshops.

We have one co-chair looking for a partner.  There are many committee members all ready to go.  We need that special someone who can co-lead a coordinated effort, providing our congregation with the best retreat possible.

Office Volunteer Needed

The UUCM office needs a volunteer who can come in and assist the administrator on a weekly basis. 
In the past this has been a Thursday, but Wednesday or Friday could also work.  The hours are flexible - in general we are looking for someone who can come in once a week for about 4 hours (or more if you want!).  I need to fill this position by the beginning of February.volunteer hands
 
Skills Required:
PC computer skills including Microsoft Office, Windows and Internet.  Basic office skills such as filing and answering phones.  Good attention to detail.  Ability to lift up to 20 lbs (for example a box of printer paper) is desirable but not required.  Prior database experience desirable but not required.  Basic knowledge of UUCM Committee structure is desirable.  Confidentiality is of utmost importance.
 
This position reports to and is supervised by the administrator.  Please contact Janette for a description of duties.

Shelter Update

Emergency Shelter Update 1/17/10
Three new ladies came to the shelter Sunday night.  (One of them is a refugee from Katrina.) They are beginning to feel more comfortable with us and are opening up and telling us more of their stories.

Much appreciation this week is extended to:
Mary Bicknell, John and Peter Blickensderfer, Bev Munyon, Suzi Musgrove, Nani Ranken,Valerie Taylor, Ellen Thurmond and Monique Webster.

Future Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers who deliver food for future Sunday sleep-overs may leave the dish (clearly labeled "Shelter") in the kitchen before 5:30. Volunteers who stay to break bread with our guests should read the following Shelter Guidelines.

 

There will be at least one professional shelter staff person with us at all times. Safety and privacy are paramount.  On Sunday nights, UUCM is a true "sanctuary:" A "Safe House."
